Hopefully these charts from the SCSW, 3rd edition, will help you. Was there a letter prefix in the serial number. This model should have diamond stocks with a flat latch. This model was discontinued before S&W quit pinning barrels. I gave one of these to my granddaughter. Buffalo Bore makes a potent .38 S&W self defense load.

As the chart above shows, the flat latch lasted until 1966. The R prefix started in 1969. So there is the gap related to the flat thumbpiece and the non-prefix serial number.

The H prefix chart is a mistake. That was only used on the .32 caliber guns. R was used for the Terrier, the .38 RP and a couple stainless revolvers.
