Default Understudies-Let's See 'Em

I like the concept of an "understudy", a smaller caliber gun, that mimics the frame size, weight and feel of a larger caliber gun, while using less expensive ammo, and offering reduced recoil, so a guy can practice, without breaking the bank.
K-Frame .22's are wonderful, because they are cheap to shoot, and handle like K/L-Frame .357's.
In my accumulation there are 2 pair of such revolvers. A 617 ND has the same full lug as 686-6.

And a CSP 18-3 to go with a CPD 66 ND. I've posted the 18-3, recently. It was used by Colorado State Patrol to train cadets, before they moved up to .38's and .357's. I don't know for sure, but was told that they carried 19's and 66's, on-duty.
I don't know what agency CPD is, as it was a pawn-shop buy.
The 18-3 was consigned to the LGS, by the retired trooper, who bought it from CSP when they transitioned to semi-autos.

What have you guys got, that you'd consider an understudy to another gun, in your collection?

I have several... M&P 15-22 for 5.56 ARs, have a TacSol conversion kit for my Springfield TRP 1911, and a .22 Combat Masterpiece which understudies for a 19-3. And a few I have on-topic pics of...

14-2 / 17-2

First Model Outdoorsman - by the thread rules, an understudy for the 1905 4th Change Target, but IMHO spiritually closer with the 38/44 Outdoorsman...

And an M&P .22 Compact that's almost the understudy for it's 9mm big brother...

I have just posted these three, but the matching size and feel of them is amazing. Models 19-2, 15, and 18-2, 4 inch K frames.

And sort of close baby chief .38 spec. and 34-1 .22

Here's sort of a different spin on your theme.

A Model 31, .32 Long, I-frame, shipped August 1958.

A Model 36, .38 Spl., J-frame, shipped October 1959.

I have several. S&W Models 17 & 18. A .22LR 1911, a .22LR Walther PPK/s and a .22 conversion for my Sig P226.
A cheap and practical way to practice.
I give my Model 18 full credit for teaching me how to properly shoot a S&W revolver in DA mode.

I've always liked the idea. I have several pairs that would qualify, but unfortunately, no S&W!

Here's my favorite, A BL22 with my Model 94:

Interesting Note: One of these is a Browning design but doesn't have his name, and the other has his name but wasn't designed by him!

Default My group!

I saw this thread a few days ago, while at work and I knew I'd need time to dig 1 out of storage! But wanted to add a few of mine! All are shooters, all are actually in very good shape (should have wiped them down a bit more) regardless of my poor photo skills! Top to bottom, 57-1, 19-3 and a 35-1. 57 came to me 2 years ago with the Millet sight and I had to swap the Altamonts on there, as the original Target grips just don't fit my hands. The 19, I've owned for probably 35 years, no idea where the original grip are - the ones one there now were my Dad's from when he was a State Trooper, he had them on his duty model 10 and later a 65 and kept them when he retired - no idea of the maker, but they're well worn and fit my hand perfectly. This 19 is now a bit loose, was my 1st 357 and it's seen thousands of 38/357 rds in it's life. The 35, I picked up off of GB a few years ago, was actually missing grips, so those Altamonts were added. The back of the front sight had red nail polish on it on arrival, I removed it and found that at some point, a small piece of brass had been soldered onto the back of the sight, it was very well done and a nice discovery. If an actual gunsmith did the work, which I'm guessing, they probably did an action job as well, because it's perfect for me and by far the nicest of any of my J frames. I consider it my steal of the decade - as I'm into it right a bit less than 500 including the grips! The 57 and 35 have original S&W model 22 holsters, the 19 has a Baker. Thanks for this thread - never thought about a family pic! Bill in MA

This .25acp 1908 vest pocket is sort of an understudy for the big brother .45acp 1911. If nothing else it makes for a cute picture.

Thank you gfors for the understudy idea. As close as I can get to "understudy" is the "Big Brother, Little Brother" idea.

My Little Brother is a Model 63, 22lr, with 3" barrel
My Big Brother is a Model 629 Classic, 44 mag, 6 1/2"barrel

Both are stainless with black rubber grips and both have the locking device. They are similiar in looks when side by side. I think that's pretty cool.

I've taken over 30 gophers with Little Brother and have yet to get Big Brother to the range to experience the magnum force. I'm relatively new to the S & W family, so it should be fun to see how they shoot.

I love them too!! However I have always disliked the "understudies" may be the lesser powered of the big boys but have plenty of knock down power when it comes to PRICE $$$$!!!!
I have an 18 that you'd call me a liar if I told you about how many .22s have been through it.I was fortunate to have a wonderful Grandfather and an awesome Dad so I grew up with S&W in my blood but when I started buying them years ago I'd lust after such "understudies" ESPECIALLY the full underluggers but they'd cost TWICE what a .38 or even a .357 cost so it took me years to obtain them... and I have gone over bored ever since. I have many but I'll throw in a picture of a small selection

And HO-LEE HECK.... check out that MkIVNo2 above in .22! High five on that piece goodness... I just have this Ol ratty No4mk2 myself...but it's no understudy unfortunately (although it's a-ok in my book too)

My girl has a Walther CCP hat she's fond of. While not exactly the same trigger, the Walther P22 has a similar feel in the hand, and makes for good practice.

K-Frame .22's are wonderful, because they are cheap to shoot, and handle like K/L-Frame .357's.

In the strictest sense of your criteria (cheaper to shoot/less recoil) my M48-4 could be the understudy to all my other revolvers, but I could use the rest of the criteria (smaller caliber, frame and weight similar) to say that most of my revolvers are understudies to the ones just above them. For instance, my .41M's understudy my .44M. The .357's understudy the .41's, and I can shoot .38Spl's for less recoil than the .357's. Expense of shooting is about the same for me, I reload and have plenty of materials for the centerfire guns, and .22 Magnum prices make the M48 about as expensive to shoot as my reloads.

Same goes for my 1911's. My .45 is less recoil than the 10mm, and I have 9mm that is less than the .45, and I have a Ruger 22/45 that is less than all of them.
