Default What would have wore these grips?

These came on a 4 screw model 29 I bought a few months ago. As you can see they are smooth finish with silver emblems but a "coke" style profile. I would like to know which era and what N frame model of guns could these have originally been found on.

Thank you,

Robb

If you go to page 2 of the albums, look at Doc44's S&W Stocks. I'm sure you will find a set that will be close. The escutcheon is a key to dating them. Doc44 will probably give you the exact date or close to it when he sees your thread. They are gorgeous by the way.

Where would I find the album section you mentioned? I did not know there was such a section here on the site.

Thank you,

Robb

From the home page at the top, you’ll see “pictures and albums.” Or here:

Generally speaking, the stocks you have date from around 1959 to early 1969 when the escutcheon and escutcheon nut were changed to the style seen on the stocks shown below. The change in the escutcheon was coincidental with the deletion of the diamond on checkered stocks and the directive to implement these changes was issued by S&W on December 28, 1967. It took about a year to exhaust the old style of stocks. Note in the photo how the escutcheon is "embedded" in the stocks, whereas, it is flush with surface on the old style of stocks. Your stocks could have been ordered for any N-frame, but most likely would have been on an engraved or special order Model 27, 29, or 57.

Could you possibly post a photo of the bottoms. The profile of the bottoms help in determining, the early ones were more oval then became more "square" when they changed to the diamond target era.

Rob:

Sorry you had trouble locating the album last night. I wasn't on long, just checked in after letting the dog out. I don't know it all but I am getting to know where to go to get the answer and who to get the answer from. Those are nice stocks and the bottom shape is consistent with "cokes", wish they stuck with that profile. Doc44's and other's constant help is much appreciated.

Definately looks like the bottom shape of my few sets of checkered cokes.

Pretty much matches the checkered cokes I have when I put them end to end.
