Default M-64 a good value?

I've been wanting a m-67 for a while but not finding one at a price I can live with myself on. LGS has a heavy barrel 64 4" tagged at $449, very decent shape with S&W target grips, not original, I'm sure. I can likely get it for less than tagged, not sure how much less. What's ya think?

A good price. Better nab it while you can!

The Model 67 is the stainless version of the Model 15 .38 Combat Masterpiece. <5 bills is an excellent price, assuming the condition is in the higher grades.

Edit: Sorry. I misread your post. Even a 64 is a good buy at $449.

The Model 64 is the stainless version of the Model 10. I would prefer it to the M67 because I like fixed sights. If you want a target gun to shoot many different loads from, I suppose you would want adjustable sights. Each to his own. These days, that is probably a good price. Buy it now and when an M67 comes along you can sell the M64 for close to or even more than what you have in it.

I paid close to $600 for mine, with PC Magna grips, after taxes and fees, about 18 months ago.

I've got a tapered 64. It's LE turn in but is not marked as such. I paid $250 for it about 10 years ago. About six years ago I got a BRPD marked 65 with 3" barrel for $350. Last year I paid $450 for a 4" 64 heavy barrel marked "EBRPSO" (East Baton Rouge Parish) at a police supply house. They reduced them to $350 about a week after I got mine. Last I checked they were sold out. They all shoot very well and I swap carrying them. I picked up a flap holster a couple of weeks ago in Tulsa. The guy had two, I should have bought both. It works very well on the 4-wheeler, tractor, and zero turn.

I have a 4" heavy barrel and really enjoy shooting it. My EDC is a 2", but the 4" is nice to shoot.

I passed on a 66 ND a year ago at 450$ because I did not like the stainless rear sight. Now one is offered at 750$. "Think it over." (Sean Connery in Outland.)

$449 is a good price, these days, for a Model 64 of any variant. If you can get it for less and if it has no mechanical issues, consider it a major win.

Mine gets the most range time . 38 Special is a sweet shooting round , loads can be developed to drive tacks .
I aged so I had a Red Dot sight mounted and now I'm back to driving tacks with this rig . There is just something right about size , shape and balance of heavy barreled model 64 with 4" tube ... it hangs right on the target . I wish my eyes were 20 again ... I'm not a huge red dot sight fan ...adds bulk ... but it do shoot nice groups .
Get It While The Getting Is Good !

That's a fair price these days, if he lets you have it for $449 OTD and doesn't charge tax. I would take 4 $100 bills and put them on the counter and see if he bites. Good luck.

$449 is cheep. I'd buy it all day everyday.
I paid $600 for my 64-4 and I'm very happy with it.

Red face

I paid $400 pre Covid for my 4” 64 that had some serious scratches on the top strap just because I wanted one.
I think I used 120 grit sandpaper to remove the scratches and restore a matte finish to it.
Added some Thailand grips and I am more than happy with how it turned out.
One of my favorites.

The Thai grips are spot on. I have several sets of them and they fit my hand great. The fit and finish on them are very nice. I have a set on my 637 I carry a lot.

I like the ones on my 64 being they don’t have the finger grooves. They fit my hand better.

I just bought a 64 no dash in very good condition for 475 through the WTB section I’d go there first for anything you may want. There’s always someone with one to many. Good Luck

If you want a 67 don’t buy a 64 unless you want to own both. Wait for a 67. Personally I’d be happy with either.

I have a 64, and a 67 no dash. They are both great guns! The offered price would make a buyer of me. Now if you can get it down some even better! Bob

I also bought one of these 64's from Barney's - the week after they went to $350. Decent gun overall and shoots great. A friend bought the round butt gun that looks to have been rebarreled (probably from a snub to the current 4"). His is a bit tighter.
