Default Model 10-5 in Name or Frame Only?

LGS has this Model 10-5 that was modified with an aftermarket 6 inch barrel reportedly for competition.

Although it does have the appearance of a significant amount of use, the cylinder locks up tight and and it appears to be completely functional. The only branding I can see on the barrel is on the right side along the top rail. It is the Aristocrat Gunsight Company, San Gabriel California.

I am looking for feedback regarding whether this one is worth an investment of around $400. My initial thought is to just keep it as a well-used shooter at the range, but might consider replacing an original barrel.

Thoughts and suggestions?

I would snap it up for that price. It's a high end target gun that cost way more than that a long time ago.

Expensive to make during the PPC days, likely there was work done that may prevent a replacement factory barrel being installed.

Certainly worth the money and good luck with it. Personally, though, it would never adorn my gun safe because its simply butt ugly.

Buy it at that price. It is probably a great shooter.

You can invite a friend to hold the barrel up while you shoot!

I'd grab it, I really want a comp gun, those shooters and aftermarket barrel guys took that stuff seriously!

Good luck!

I'd buy it, clean it, shoot the hell out of it and repeat.

I would not try to replace the barrel with an original.
Somebody has already put big money into making a custom competition gun out of it.
Why spend money just to make it exactly like the 50 million other tapered barrel model 10s?

As other's have said... at $400 it's well worth it. The Aristocrat rib and sight probably cost 1/2 that amount back in the day.

If you can determine whether or not one of the PPC gunsmith gurus (like Bill Davis) did the work to convert it into a full on PPC gun, that would add value to it.

In my parts $400 would buy a "beater", and this gun while well used, is far from being a beater.

I’m with the buy it, that’s a great price, and clean it up and enjoy it at the range.
I suspect the action and the accuracy of that revolver will be sublime.
That revolver while not “pretty” is functionally beautiful. 👍👍

Back in the 70's that gun would have cost you closer to $800 (1970 dollars). That is a custom built PPC revolver, and I'd bet has an outstanding double action trigger, and would group the 148 gr HBWC into 2" at 50 yards.

That's a PPC revolver and $400 is a low price. What's wrong with it? You might not be able to return it to a stock Model 10 configuration, so if you like the heavy slab barrel, buy it and shoot it like you stole it... and at $400... again, what's wrong with it?

This one I had built in 1978 by John Towle TNT Arms North Conway, NH. Built on a M15-3, this has a Douglas premium bbl, full length Bomar rib. I have never seen a trigger to equal this. The cylinder was air spun, and rotates like it is on ball bearings,

The guy that did the work was on the front cover of Gun World Magazine.

It does shoot! My oldest son asked me for this the other day.

I would not hesitate to buy it for 400

$400 seems like a good steal! Heck, if you would somehow miss your attacker 6 times, you can beat him to death with it!

Jim Clark did make these fine PPC guns back in the day on model 10 revolvers. Wouldn't be surprised if they still do so today. If one of these revolvers came across me I'd probably break my hand getting my wallet out to pay for it. Sadly I've only seen one PPC revolver and that one was made on a Colt Trooper III revolver single action only. Only reason I never bought it was the cylinder had so much play it wasn't worth my time and money to find someone who could do the necessary repairs. Frank
