Default Make a " Pinto "

I am sure I am going to get some heat on this and not really sure I will move forward with it. " Pinto " gun are very interesting to me and was wondering if it would be feasible to merge ( or marry ) a S&W Model 10-8 and a S&W Model 64-3 by changing the barrel and cylinder assembly's? They are both pinned heavy barrels. OR am I just opening a can of worms with this idea. It would be easy to swap cylinder's and see if there would be timing issues but not sure if there are issues with barrel thread or diameter differentness. Has anyone tried this? Did it work? OR maybe I would have to use a nickeled Model 10??

Not a true pinto, but it would be different. Do it and show us the result.

Pintos are Blue and Nickel - the stainless steel 64 parts would look different.

But worth a try if you like the look.

I like it! I think it was the Michigan State Police that issued their officers a blued Model 49 with a stainless cylinder years ago, so there is a precedent for what you're doing. You ought to at least consider going all the way - cylinder release and screws, too!
Good luck and we'll be standing by for photos if you decide to proceed.

Here is one I did with a Model 10 frame and a 64 barrel and cylinder. Both were bead blasted. Frame is matte blue.

Would a 642/442 mashup be a pinto?

Default Pinto

Little update, I took the cylinder assembly's out of my blue Model 10 and the stainless Model 64 and tried to " swap " them out. Now the 64 cylinder assembly dropped right in the Model 10 but the cylinder gap was on the large side, the Model 10 cylinder would not close in the 64 as the crane was binding and the cylinder gap was non existent. So a direct swap of the cylinder/crane assembly is out of the question. I do believe this is a non-starter project for right now. Maybe I will pursue down the road using a nickel Model 10.

Probably would work if you swapped the barrels too.

I have a model 10-8 which I had a gunsmith cut to 3" and slab side the barrel and install a dovetail front sight. I was going to have the whole thing bead blasted and then parkerized, but he ran into delays so I just had the barrel cold blued for now. I have a parts kit from a model 64-3 so I thought I would get creative since the gun is already customized.

I swapped cylinders, cylinder release, side plate screws, hammer and trigger. Fun project that will probably be staying this way. The cylinder gaps at .005"-.006" and appears to lock up and time well.
