Just curious....it's been a while since I've seen anything about them.

Not that I'm aware of. I check in here almost every night, and I'm sure I would have seen something if the forum was aware of it.

I keep looking, whenever I see an older HP. Saw a nice 6 inch no dash the other day in the 180xxx s/n range which got me to thinking about it.

It will be found, and letter as a 5" nickel.

It will have been converted back in the early 70s to .44 Special.

Pls. chime in. A mod 28 is stamped on the frame as "Mod.-28".
The gun we are discussing is stamped " Mod.28-1"
Would a gun stamped " Mod.-28-1", be bogus or correct?

The Standard Catalog of S&W, 4th edition says only 1 is reported.
The 28-1 was replaced by the 28-2 when they became 3 screws.

Assuming a Model 28-1 is stamped like other -1 model variations, it would be stamped MOD. 28-1 in the yoke cut.

Default Model 28-1

There was (is) only one which was owned by a forum member at one time.

Thanks all for chiming in. The 28-1, I believe is a 6" and was for sale and living in AZ or NM. So, if anyone comes across an HP that is stamped "Mod.-28-1", run away or take a chance and buy it? What would the range of the Sn. be on a legit gun?

It would have an S serial number and be in the 200,000 series IIRC. If I found one I would buy it and verify it after, unless the stamping looked wrong.

My theory is the factory was set up to stamp MOD 28-1 for more than one gun, so they are out there. Unicorn hunt!

I heard rumors of a four inch a few years ago, in the Southwest if I remember....maybe Texas or Arizona. There were no photos to go with the claim though. Even though I'm not accumulating any more I still look and would jump on one if I found it.

Alan, agree. But after all these years and all the collectors aware of the 28-1, only one verifiable example has surfaced?

It's probably lying in the same hole as Jimmy Hoffa.

The serial number range would be approximately S219000 to S230000.

Just more speculation...

Low demand/small number of orders and therefore production; higher demand or conversion to other N frames (27-1s, not common but more so than 28-1s); or they have just not surfaced yet. Anyone's guess.
