S&W 12-2 with safety
I found this gun for sale on a table at Las Vegas Antique Show. Smith and Wesson developed the gun with a safety on the right side at the request of the French.

Is that cylinder release actually on the right side of the frame, or is the picture printed wrong?

S&W developed the gun with a safety on the right side of the frame for the French. S&W used a cylinder release button for the safety.

Heard of that variation but have never actually seen one. What were they asking?

I've read that some sort of
safety was installed on
Victory models for the
British in WWII.
I also remember seeing a
prototype safety for a
Ruger Security Six, a lever/switch
protruding up from the left
side of the hammer.
Makes me think S&W got
the IL idea from Ruger but
used a key lock system.

The 12-2 was done in 1965 before Ruger was producing double action revolvers.

While I know it to be redundant, this was to keep the weapon from firing when it was dropped to the ground.

Same things that keeps every other one from firing. The hammer black and the hump on the rebound slide that blocks forward movement of hammer until trigger is back
