This Model 60 was ordered from S&W in 1980 and subsequently engraved and inlaid with gold (two colors) on the trigger guard. The big horn sheep was inlaid on the side plate using ivory and gold. I had never seen this done before.
When I saw this revolver in Tulsa on Saturday, I had to add it to my collection.
The engraving and inlay work was done by S&W's Master Engraver, Dominqos Joaquin, in 1981. I did not have a revolver engraved by him and now I have one of his best works.
Gold on bottom of trigger guard and close-up of sculpted front sight.

That's a wonderful gun!
The Big Horn appears to be jumping out of the sideplate. The depth of the inlay is just incredible, he looks like he's sticking out 3/4"! The front sight is pretty neat too.
Interesting non-PC smooth Magnas.
Thank you for sharing.

Nice gun, but the bland grips and the butchery of the front sight would have caused me to pass on it.
The grips can be replaced, but that sight...what was the engraver thinking?!
On the other hand, the scrollwork is better than seen on some other factiory engraving that's been posted here.

Bill, that is a beauty. Glad I got to see it in person.
That front sight is cool, what a creative imagination.

Another beauty Bill !
Please take a picture of the trigger guard, the big horn and engraving are really really nice. I think the front sight is a great statement of originally and design by the artist. This is after all a work of art ! It would look great with some carved ivory grips.
GREAT FIND !

That is a work of art. The 3-D effect if the big horn ram is unbelievable. I second a request for a close up shot of the ram.
how's it shoot

That looks like a golden ram from whence the golden fleece came. Words cannot describe how much that appeals to me. I like the front sight myself, as I doubt anyone will ever shoot it. I know I would break it open and return as close as possible to NOT turn the cylinder. I'd like to see a closeup of the front sight, too, if I may. May be more than meets the eye there. It gets too distorted when I try to blow it up enough for closer inspection. WOW!!!

DJ did the work when he was an employee of S&W. The Model 60 will letter as a custom engraved revolver and I have a copy of the original invoice and the engraving order. The engraving order is also listed on the end label on the box.

Usually I find animals inlaid on guns to be very cheesy looking. But that ram is a real work of art. Beautiful perspective and the way it seems to emerge from the frame is truly masterful.

Beautiful!!! A work of art that is uncommon these days. You are quite fortunate to have such a beautiful revolver. When I was a young guy I really didn't get the attraction to engraved and inlaid guns. With age and experience, I now appreciate them and find them to be very handsome when done well like that M60. Congratulations on getting that one!

Bill,
Please post more pics. I would like to see the inlay on the trigger guard, the other side, and a closeup of the front sight.
I look at engraved guns when I have the chance. I'm no authority, but I can appreciate talent. That ram is unique to me also. I have never seen ivory inlaid into steel in that manner. Fascinating!

Bump in the hopes of seeing more pix!
Like Lee says, I've never seen ivory inlaid like that into an engraved gun either. That is really unique. When I first looked I just asumed it was gold, then flagged on Lee's comment. (Rereading Bill's original post tho, I see he pointed it out and cited it as one of the reasons he bought the gun.)
Wonder how it is affixed?
Anybody else ever seen another gun with an ivory bas relief carving inlaid, embedded, like that?

I haven't seen this gun since I was a young boy. I think it was one of the top 10 that my Dad engraved. It was one of my personal favorites that he did. I can remember him telling me when I asked about the grips. "Less is more son and it keeps them coming back for more". Doc please take good care of it. His radius cuts are like no others. There is a secret to it that no one would know unless you seen him cut in person

That front sight is fantastic. Takes me back to the days of custom mascots on the radiator of hand built cars. Just wonderful.
