Puzzle SOLVED!! Model 36 no dash J Frame RB Grips
Hi Folks!
I have an interesting puzzle for you and would appreciate your help.
I have a Model 36 no dash J Frame RB. 3 screw pinned barrel. It is now wearing Pachmayer model 36 Round Butt grips that fit perfectly.
BUTT, (pun Intended), I have been trying to find age appropriate OE S&W J RB grips. BUTT, I have discovered they won't fit! I have tried several pairs and all are too large! See pix of one attempt to fit..
How can this be? A puzzling Conundrum indeed!
I need the help and wisdom of the wise membership of this forum!
What is going on and what is the remedy?
This is a very nice J RB and I would like to treat it to some equally nice OE grips!
I appreciate the help and the opportunity to learn about this J!
OH YEAH, This does NOT have a flat latch!

K frame
Could be those wooden grips are sized more for a K Frame?

J RB Grips
Was there a model 36 I frame? I thought the J frame was smaller than I frame?

Dutchman54 ,
Your gun is a J frame. The grips you show are for a K frame.

Dutchman54 -- your Chiefs Special Model 36 certainly does have a flat latch thumbpiece. It's one of the two styles with 11 ridges that were used between 1955 and about 1961. The flat latch before yours had 10 ridges and the one after it had 12.
If yours is marked MOD. 36 on the frame in the yoke cut, that narrows its age down a bit more. The earliest known Model 36 shipped in September 1958.
There is no such thing as a Chiefs Special I-frame.
The first small frame built for the .38 Special cartridge was called "MODEL J BLUE Ser. # 6."
It was after the S&W sales force attended the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference, October 7-12, 1950, that the name -- chosen by the Chiefs of Police -- Chiefs Special came to be.
ken158 nailed it.
A pair of J-frame magna round butt grips with a diamond around the screw and screw nut escutcheons will fit your Chiefs Special perfectly. Here's a shot of my 1959-shipped Chiefs Special with the matching serial number diamond magna grips.
Best of luck in your search. They're out there.

Good information above. The original .38 Chiefs Special (J frame, to accommodate the longer cylinder than the I frame .38) had a 'grip' frame with the same dimensions as the I. This went away with the model of 1953 J frames, which are 1/8" longer than previous.

Puzzle SOLVED! Thanks everyone for all the help. I learned about the flat latches and that mine is earlier than I thought. Also, for sursies, I test fit these grips to a model 10 K frame RB! They fit perfectly!
Thanks again to all who weighed in on this!!
