Model 28 4"--- Investment??
OK, I have an opportunity to acquire a totally MINT model 28 NIB with paperwork/tools etc.. for way under market value, he is a friend that is giving me a good deal on it, if I want it.
What is the better investment--- A NIB COLT AR15A4 or the 28? Im considering selling the COLT I have to get the 28.

The 28! They are not making them any more! AR's pretty common from what I know. Bob

Most definitely the NIB Highway Patrolman. If it's a S prefix 28 or earlier (like a pre model) get on the phone to your friend now.

I vote for getting the Model 28. ARs are as common as dirt, Model 28s aren’t.

If you do not need the proceeds from the sale, keep the AR and buy the model 28. You’re welcome!

If you think you may be LOOKING for trouble someday, keep the AR. Otherwise, I’m with most others here; pounce on the 28. Reminds of joke - guy calls his financial advisor and asks what he should buy? Advisor says can goods and ammo! Think about it in context of today’s current events.

So, you said for investment purposes. I guess you would need to look at what you have in for the Colt. Maybe you bought it awhile ago...seems like they are going for around 1000. No longer being manufactured...
The 28 seems to be going for around 800 to 1000 if you can find one. Also, not being manufactured. How much under retail is your friend offering it to you?
It is very hard to say what will be a good investment down the line. That is why I buy guns to shoot and not for investment.

You said you could purchase the 28 under market but did not divulge what you believe to be market price… As noted, AR’s are common and made by a zillion companies but a Colt will hold and increase in value - especially during these turbulent times…

Sell the AR-15 and invest in precious metals. I never thought that any gun was a good investment, especially anything with plastic on it.

Investment as to hold value against inflation,,or investment in hopes to increase in value and make you a lot of money beyond what inflation will gobble up when cash-in time comes??
Any of it is pure speculation.
Both are NIB items , so they are great Collectors arms.
You never know where certain guns are going to go.
Winchester Model 12's were hot items at one point. Now they go begging for buyers.
Colt SAA's are flat as are vintage SxS shotguns.
These last two were considered the best investments in guns not to awful long ago.
Not anymore. If you bought late thinking a big return,,sorry.
If you simply bought 'cause you liked it,,great. You got exactly that.
Too many people buy guns and the first thing they think of is how much can I get for it when I sell it.
They don't do that with hardly any other item they buy that I can think of.
Not a house,,nor a car. Not that boat or golf cart or snowmobile,,not a Rolex,,just a firearm for some reason.
A Colt AR or M28 here or there isn't going make a bit of difference in lifes finances when cash-in time comes.
Buy what you want, keep what you want and enjoy them while you can.

I recommend both. For me personally, I'd go M28 if 4".
I seldom buy as investment unless price is way outta line and one cant help but sell for profit. I buy guns based on my desire to own them and try to buy at a price where I can at least break even when time for them to go.
Let us know what you do.

If 28 is below market value, what are we talking? I don’t deal in ARs but there are Colt ARs worth considerable money and will go up in value just as 28 will. Not enough info to make educated guess. I have no use for ARs but I bought one in case I do end up needing one.

I'm thinking buying any firearm as an investment isn't a good idea. Everyone needs a carbine for SD so selling one might be a yuge mistake. Once you have the required 3 gun setup (carbine, shotgun, pistol) then focus on revolvers, muzzle loaders, or whatever else tickles your fancy.
I'm not convinced firearms are an investment anyway. Most of the ones I've owned over the years didn't return a very good profit when sold. I have however, made plenty of money in the market.
As an example,
Quote:
$10,000 invested on the first trading day of January 2001 in the S&P 500 would have been worth around $50,900 by the end of 2021.

I don’t think of ether as “investment grade,” which do YOU want more?
When it comes to investment grade in those guns, maybe a NIB 1964 SP-1 or a S&W Registered Mag, but not a modern Colt or Model 28. My .02
