Default Model 36 no dash serial #

Just picked up a nice model 36 no dash 3" thin barrel RB. It has a kind of different SN. Its 60J6_. I've never seen a SN like this before.

I've called S&W customer service who said it was shipped in 70-71. But she added, she was basing this info on the "floating" J in the SN used in the model 36's in 1970- 71. Not on the exact SN itself.

I've look and look everywhere & can't find any mention of this SN configuration. Maybe a special order for LE who requested a certain set of serial numbers for their order?

Thanks in advance for any info / help.

P.S.....I've been off the forum for several years. Life just got in the way. I'm glad to be back.

The "floating-J" serial numbers were being produced in the early 1970's for a few years. Someone will be along soon to give more specific information.
Do a search on this site and you will find lots of Floating-J commentary.
Show us some pictures. There are lots of us here that like the Chiefs Special models.

Welcome back!

60J6 followed by two more digits would indeed be from about 1971-'72 (production), with ship or sales dates into 1973.

According to my database, it most likely shipped in the latter part of 1971, probably Sep - Dec time frame.

Welcome back.

According to S&W Historian Dr. Roy Jinks, serial numbers in the “roving J series” began at 1J1 in 1970 and ran to 994J94 in 1973. I’ve seen Model 36 s/n 997J66.

Serial numbers contain the "roving J" and up to 5 numbers, with 1 to 3 numbers before the J and 1 to 4 numbers after it.

9J9999 precedes 10J1,
99J999 precedes 100J1,
and so on

My database supports KEN L's estimate of your Chiefs Special's ship date.
