IMHO the M18 is about the best ever 22LR Revolver made. I've got a couple of them and they are always a pleasure to shoot - quite accurate too. The only issue usually experienced with them is sometimes extraction can be a bit tight. Not to worry, the chambers are easily reamed out and the issue (if yours has it) will be a non issue afterwards.

The M18 is a perfect understudy for a M15!

I have had my model 18 longer than any other S&W I own, I bought it new and have no doubt it has the highest round count of any gun I own and none of the others have a chance of catching up

The Mod 18 is a great understudy for learning Mod's 48, 19, and 67. Great for transitions, pickup/follow through and trigger control. Works fine out of the same holster "big brother" runs in. Not useful for learning reloading, however easy enough to do that with dummy and the big gun.

My 18-3 has the sticky chambers. I can get about 50 rounds through it before I have to run a brass brush through the charge holes. My '57 .22 Combat Masterpiece has no issues and I can shoot as much as I want. That one will never be sold.

Default Model 18

I am a big fan of the Model 18. Got mine new for Christmas in 1972. I have fired this revolver more than any other handgun I own. At the time that i got this gun we had a local department store that was a great place for purchasing ammunition. With my part time job I was able buy a brick of .22 per week at this store. Whatever was priced lowest is what I bought. Some times it was Winchester or Rem LR. For awhile they had CIL .22 Short from Canada really cheap. The low cost allowed me to practice double action until I could actually hit stuff. I later added a model 34, an early 50's pre model number k-22, and just last week a very nice Model 17-3 also from 1972. Also have early Model 67 and am now waiting to pay off the layaway on a 14-3. K frames are great guns. Good luck with your Model 18.

I occasionally had sticky chambers in my M-17. Not a big problem....I just ream out the chambers with a .40 cal. Brass Brush. The chambers get covered with residue from dirty .22 cal. ammo, and the expanded brass after shooting, will stick inside. Bob

I know for a fact that I can run over a brick of 22lr though my 18-4 and eject the next 6 with an easy thumb press. It has always been good, but it was an exception to the rule. I have 5 S&W 22lr revolvers 2 of them pre models some were sticky so I have reamed all of them they all eject easy after a lot of rounds.

My personal belief is how well one ejects depends on where the reamers were in their life cycle when they got reamed. New to slightly worn they are fine then it goes down hill. I If they were used figuring same life cycle as other caliber ones that could be why the problem occurs in 22 so much, Less OD and less flutes=faster wear

Congrats on that Model 18. They are truly fine revolvers. I used one as a training revolver back in my LEO days. It was cheap and easy training and didn't ruin my ears on the PD's indoor range.

My current Model 18 will get sticky chambers after a hundred rounds or so. If I'm spending the day out shooting, I'll bring a box of 22 Shorts to shoot as they'll chamber and extract just fine after extensive shooting with the Long Rifle rounds. Accuracy is only slightly degraded. The target below is my Model 17 shooting 22 Shorts at 20 yards.
