17-2 is just plain fun
Bought a P&R M17-2 6" a while ago thanks to the addiction fed by this forum and finally got around to shooting it. After years of shooting and qualifying with 9 mm, 40 S&W and 5.56 I have to say this thing is a blast to shoot. Zero recoil. Tack driver.
Sorry no pics, it's all sooty now! Happy Independence Day!

Certainly agree, a real blast to shoot. I have a 17-2 6" with a 1965 birth date. I like to shoot CCI Stingers off the bench at 50 and 100 yards (Same POA and POI). Even though it's not a target ammo per se., proves to be very accurate. Great gun.

Probably one of the funnest handguns in my inventory. Popping cans and pinecones or just punching paper is a real treat with a Model 17.
The target below is from a few weeks ago using 22 shorts at 20 yards and the Weaver-stance-double-action. The old gal is more accurate with long rifle ammo, but shorts work fine too. My only complaint with it is the wide trigger for SA shooting as I shoot mostly double action. It's a habit from my LEO days with revolvers. Still, it's a tack driver and I'll leave it in its original shape.

My late wife bought me a Ruger Single Six and a 17-1. These are the last to go in my collection. The 17-1 is an amazing piece of machinery! More accurate than I ever will be.

Love mine also !!! Mines a 17-4. I added the beautiful used bin Herretts which I reshaped to have a narrower bottom and and a slight palm swell. Obtained from estate with original box / grips and the awesome S&W holster. I shoot this more than any of my other .22 handguns. It would be a tie if my model 18 didn’t have TT & TH.

I have a 1968 17-3 that I need to get out and shoot, but as much as I want to get that out, I have a 17-4 3T 8 3/8" that needs shooting

The 17's are S&W's classic secret fun machines. I love that S&W's best models have always been built under the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" rule. I have a pre-k, a 22 Target built around 1947. Other than the extra screws, slightly different internals, and ejector rod, all 17's I've handled still shoot and feel the same as my 75-year-old tack driver. Great designs make for generations-long consistency.

I love my 17's. 2 of them are long tubes, a 17-3 and a 17-4 The other one is a 6", cant remember the dash number. Those long tubes sure get the looks when I take one to the range. I'm usually the only one shooting a wheel gun and most definitely the only one with a long tube.
Can't say enough about their accuracy. Love'um.

My 17-3 keeps me from spending money on other .22 handguns. No need.

Beautiful gun, aren't the grips newer than the gun?

When I want to feel like I can shoot well again, I borrow my wife's 17-3 for the 50 ft indoor range

"When I want to feel like I can shoot well again," from Heinz ^^^
That is exactly how I feel when I bring out my dad's old K22 Masterpiece! It was born in 1950 and is the best-shooting gun in my small collection. With the non-existent kick of a .22 LR and 6" barrel, it makes me feel like a semi-pro! I've never made the time to take it to a range farther than 25 yards, or used sand bags to really check its accuracy, I have no doubt of its capabilities. I remember Dad shooting a beer can across our yard up at our camp when my Uncle was home on leave (USAF lifer.) My cousins were in awe, and my uncle Bill, his little brother, said "Well (heck), Hank! You're using a 16 oz. can! Anybody could do that!" I remember like it was yesterday. I believe in my heart Smith & Wesson had probably the finest-shooting .22s ever made for the everyday American.

Thanks!
The magnas are numbered to the gun. 1967, so right at the start of the change from diamonds to plain. I have since mounted a set of diamond targets, which I prefer for both appearance and shooting.

A m17 is what started me into S&W revolvers. I got a NIB K22 in 1964. I had no interest in shooting it. Didn’t want to make used gun out of it for trade purposes. I had low opinion of DA revolvers resulting from the H&R and IJs that most of my buddies had. My Ruger S-6 was a target gun compared to them. Then a buddy pestered me into shooting the “Cop 22 “, guess because it looked like a 38 cops would carry. First time I shoot it was like being baptized. It was for a lot of others too, but at around $100 that was a tidy sum for a 22 when that was two days pay for a lot of guys in the area. Mine has been main carry 22 since. Thousands of rounds through it with no problems.
You can’t beat a M17, that is until you think about committing a sin like setting up a M41 for field carry.

This thread made me take the K22 with me to the range today. Dang it was fun! I picked the 15 yard range since nobody was there; plus I had a few other guns I needed to shoot. The 15-3 was true to form as always. The Glock 23 shot to point of aim. I had my .32 Beretta model 81. Even it did me well. I used Specials in my 629 and took the target's head apart. Fun day!

I regretted getting rid of my 17 no dash, found a 17-1 a couple years ago, fun times restored!

Got my 17-2 last year with these non-relieved diamond target stocks. Serial number indicates it was the last K frame manufactured in 1965. Definitely agree with all of the above, it is hoot to shoot!
