I picked up a issue of Handguns 2004 and it contained an article by Massad Ayoob on "What US Cops Carry Today". He spoke about the Chicago Round 38 Special +P, with an all lead 158 grain semi-wadcutter hollowpoint. Are these still available today and from what maker? All +P 38 Specials I have seen were copper jacketed HP's.

This load goes by a variety of names. Sometimes called the Treasury Load many shooters like it. I prefer my own loads but for factory ammo it's as good as most. The availability of this ammo must be an issue as I have seen numerous posts asking about where to find it on several forums. All I can suggest is call your local dealers.

I don't think Buffalo Bore ammo is what Ayoob is refering to but come to think of it I think I may have seen a ad from them for a +P Hard Cast HP. Buffalo Bore is not something found local though.

It is also known as The "FBI Load" and yes it is available. It is most commonly known as being made by Remington. But I think Winchester makes them as well.
It is the Remington .38 Spl+P LHP (Lead Hollow Point) http://www.midwayusa.com/viewP...productNumber=548921

or the Winchester .38 Spl+P LSWCHP http://www.midwayusa.com/viewP...productNumber=765718

Same thing, different price. It's my understanding that Remington expands just a little better than Winchesters...but that's hearsay.

Buffalo Bore also makes the same round...only theirs is A LOT hotter...or to be more accuate, a lot faster (pressure is still +P but they, as the website says, low level magnum velocities)
http://www.buffalobore.com/ind...product_detail&p=108

I carry Remington +P in my gun with several speedloaders of extra ammo. I also carry a speedloader of Buffalo Bore in case I need some extra punch.

Online is about the only place I've ever been able to get Buffalo Bore.

For normal +P Remington LHP I've never seen academy or walmart carry it. I usually buy mine from Collectors Firearms in Houston...but of course that's a long way from Kentucky.

I'm pretty sure I've seen it on the shelves in Bass Proshop. Do y'all have any of those up there? or Cabelas or Gander Mountain?

Midway shows out of stock & backordered. Not really shocked on that as about all ammo is hard to come by right now. I do order from Cabela's but the Buffalo Bore is all I have seen similar.

Actually, the "Treasury Load" as it was called back then, was a +P+ loaded 110 grain JHP approaching .357 velocities.
The 158 grain all lead SWCHP +P was known as the "FBI Load".

I'm sure you could order Remington or Winchester from Cabelas as well. Try shooting any of these brands into sand and dig it out...you'll be impressed.
Yeah all ammo is hard to comeby over the internet right now. But it is available in that companies still make such a load.

It was known as the Chicago, St. Louis or FBI Load, depending on where you were from. It is the Winchester 38 special +P, 158 grain lead hollow point, and it is still in the catalog.

Saxon:

The Treasury Load is not the same. Treasury Load is Winchester 38 special +P+ (I think - although I may have one too many +'s), 110 grain JHP, and its ballistics were roughly equivalent to the Winchester White Box 110 grain .357 Magnum load they still sell.

The FBI/Chicago/St. Louis load was also from Winchester, and it is 38 special +P, 158 grain Lead Hollow Point.

I've used the "FBI Load" from Remington, Federal, and Buffalo Bore. They're all good, but I like the Buffalo best. Seems to have a little more mustard than the other two.

Where is this outfit located, and what do they charge to ship a box of that load? I can't seem to find that on their site. Sorry.

Has anyone here dealt with them?

They are located in Brenham. Very good outfit. I've purchased from them many times. Being in Texas, you will get charged sales tax along with the shipping but I've never thought they gouged on shipping like some do.

Do they have a store you can actually drive to and buy ammo? I'm only about an hour and a half away in West Houston
