Default Smith & Wesson 29 - 1 6.5 barrel

Was looking at a S & W 29 - 1 for sale on line and the ad said one of only fifty to exist. I admit I rarely see 29 - 1 but does this sound right?

It’s a rare revolver. My SCSW is not close at hand but I would think that number would be somewhat accurate.Someone with a little more knowledge on 29-1`s should be along shortly. There were more 6 1/2`s than others, only made a short time before the 29-2`s came along.

I have a list of the 50 or so known 29-1s (thanks Joe). If you'll give us the SN I'll check to see if it is on it. AC man check your PMs.

Wow, so it is true they are that rare? I have a pre mod 29 4 screw and 5 screw. I had no idea it got more rare than that. Ok hold up and I 'll get the info.

Look to see if it's a 3-screw or 4-screw gun; SCSW mentions "two known with 4-screw frames". Rare within rare.

Below is a photo of Model 29-1, S220004, 4-screw frame, nickel finish. One of two known, shipped in December 1962. Click on the photo for a better look.

Truly rare S&W revolvers and even without original stocks, refinished, altered in any way, they will still bring insanely high sale prices.

I worked in a gun store in Oakland California in 1977, an older gentleman came into the store and sold his .44 mag. I told the owner that I wanted it and he told me I would have to pay full retail for it, about $230 later I was the owner of a 29-1, I guess it was a better price than what I thought, at the time. The original presentation case was stolen years ago but I still have the revolver, if the gentleman 22hipower ?,would care to check his records to see if it is listed (doubtful). It's a three screw #S228875. Someday I may attempt to dig it out of the safe and post a photo, something I've never attempted. It does have cokes and a very minimal amount of wear on the barrel and cylinder, from memory and it has the most common 6.5" barrel.

You are correct it was not on the list but is now; a list now totaling 52.

We'd love to see pictures. Fairly easy to do and there is a tutorial or we'll be glad to help you with it.

This is correct. You ever look at True Value Guns. The prices listed sold are 1/3 rd what I end up paying on Gunbroker. I would like to know where these guns are for sale?

This is apropos to nothing, just a curious comparison:
As rare as the Model 29-1 is, it isn't even close to being as rare as the Model 28-1.

Well I got into a bidding war on the 29 - 1. I think I raised my bid at the end about eight times against only one other bidder. Sold for around $4,850 which was my last bid. I would have gone higher if I had not bought a few guns in the last two months.

Well, good try anyway. I watched and it went for a little more than I thought it might. There will be another for you to chase I'm sure; patience. Another (#53) popped up today too by another Forum member. Hope he posts pictures.

That's the way it seems to go....you buy a few toys you really didn't need, deplete the play money, and then along comes something you really want! Been there, done that.

That one sold for $4850 plus sales tax, the GB sales tax carrying charge (about 1.5%), shipping, and possibly transfer. Well over $5,000 for a 6.5" with good blue but quite obviously shot. Significant turn ring, muzzle loss, flash marks on frame flats (behind cylinder). Some flattening of the grip checking IRRC. Presentation case with interior wear and missing some tools.

Surprised to see it sell that high but happy as the owner of a much nicer 6.5 incher if that is the new normal.

Well, I retired 2 months ago and have bought a as new pre model 29 4 screw and 5 screw. Mint. Along with other unfired 44 magnums for a collection. You gotta draw the line somewhere. I would love to have owned it ,just not meant to be.

Doc44 showed us his nickel one and we're not going to beat that but let's see a few of those coveted 29-1s. Here's mine that I found last December.

The letter says "Four Screw". Is it a 4 screw, or a 3 screw? I blew the pics up, and I cannot see the 4th screw.

I wondered if there were some 29-2s in that shipment, so, I checked my letter on my 29-2 5 inch, serial S231781 shipped to HH Harris. My 29-2 shipped on February 18, 1963. The letter does not state how many, if any others, were in the shipment.

Invoices (April 1958 and later) only list 44 Magnums as a Model 29 and do not list a model variation (-1, -2, etc.). If there are twenty 44 Magnums in a shipment and one of them is identified as a 29-1, the other nineteen could be -2s, or there could be a mix of -1s and -2s. It is impossible to say for certain.

In addition, I believe the first shipment of 3-screw 44 Magnums (-1 or -2) with a 5-inch barrel was made to H. H. Harris on February 18, 1963. The shipment consisted of six 44 Magnums. Some of the early -2 variation have an L stamped on the rear surface of the cylinder indicating an extractor rod and stem with a left-hand thread. I have one of these in my collection, S231233, shipped on March 7, 1963 to H. H. Harris.

I had to look because I did not remember the L. I found it, it was lightly stamped and smaller than I would have expected. In addition it has the serial number stamped on the back of the cylinder. I would not expect that on a 1963 gun.

If a gun was reworked during manufacture, S&W stamped the serial number on the rear surface of the cylinder (minus the S) to insure fitted parts were kept together. There may also be a lightly stamped R on the left side of the grip frame signifying the revolver was reworked. This is not as uncommon as one might think.

USBP SW tried to post photos but has had some challenges with that so I'm posting his pictures for him. This one is #52 on the list and we added another yesterday for #54 for anyone who might be counting.

Nice gun USBP SW and if you'd like to double your original investment I'd be happy to do it.

I would like to recognize 22highpower, a true gentleman, for helping a technologically challenged Smith aficionado post pictures of one of my prized revolvers. Thank you!

I just bought a 29-1 8 3/8 barrel length with presentation case. Presentation case was all I brought home, the gun needs to be transferred over to me it came out of an estate sale. Was wondering if there is someone here who can re-flock the foam in the presentation case?

I inherited this 29-1. I am not sure of 3 or 4 screw, rarity or value. Any info appreciated. Thanks

I commented on your post in the 1896-1961 section too. We need better pictures to help with value although condition looks very good from what we can see in the fuzzy pictures. Value for -1s has been in the $3k-$4k range although there haven't been many sales lately, reported here anyway. If you have the box/tools even better. I know of one for sale currently with box/tools/paperwork (but probably not correct stocks) with a listed price of $8800 which seems very, very optimistic to me. The downside is that the correct stocks will cost $500-$800 and if not included will reduce the value at least that much. Better pictures. please.
