5" Model 27-2 Shooter - New to Me
Hi all
I went to the Hunter Valley Gun Show here in Australia last weekend. I was there for a look and to buy some accessories. I was hoping not to buy any guns as I was saving my money for a Pardini SP .22lr for ISSF matches. Anyway, I found this 5" barrel Model 27-2 Serial Number N355183 for sale at another Forum Members table.
Its a Shooter rather than a Collectors piece, however I've never seen any other 5" Model 27-2's before. Usual checks performed - All Good. Hammer and Trigger have been changed/modified as well as the red piece in the Red Ramp Front Sight. I think that serial number puts it at 1975-1976. Happy with what I paid for it: $750 AUD ($480 USD - Our exchange rate is terrible at the moment with the USA). And before someone "asks me if I was wearing a balaclava and holding a sawn-off shotgun", firearms in Australia sometimes cannot be compared to the US market due to our harsh gun laws. Some Used Guns can seem like a bargain yet a lot of New Guns can be a rip-off compared to US Prices.
Sorry for the poor photos. Usual lighting issues when it's a gunshow held in a basketball facility.
If anyone else has a 5" Model 27, I'd love to see it.
Thanks
Moo Moo

Nice get, Moo Moo!
I've wanted one of those for a while. That smooth trigger is a lot more comfortable for sustained double action shooting. Wish I had one to share. Color me green, with envy!

Here’s mine with a pair of Keith Brown magnas & a Heiser holster. You’re going to love shooting yours.

Great gun at a really good price. I didn't know Australia still had gun shows given the difficulty of owning one. Here are my 5 inch -2s.

The OP's revolver looks like a perfect candidate for an "outback" gun. Or maybe that's where it came from. I love these shooter grade classics. I would try to wear it out by shooting it. Without any worries. Nice gun!

Hi MooMoo,
Good point about the laws and market. It's the same up in Canada. People underestimate the impact of the situation. Permits and registration processes are a big hassle, and often a big expense, with much of the work repeated for each item you own, and with some "hoops to jump through" being an annual ritual.
The intended effect is to make sure you don't think you are exercising "your rights". It's a tenuous privilege, subject to change, that you have been conditionally granted, and they make sure you know that!
It dissuades many from taking up the hobby. So, supply and demand doesn't work the same way
Glad to see you got the 27-2.
But, keep your eye on the goal, ie: the Pardini!
They are truly fantastic shooting pistols. A joy to use, very accurate and very accommodating.

I bought this 27-2 to shoot and it performs very well. It originally shipped on October 8, 1968. Click on the photo for a better look.

Dad gum it, I hate following Doc's awesome pictures of his guns!
Here is my 27-2 5 incher. I have the mahogany presentation case, tools, paperwork, and original grips too. These grips are Ram's Horn and I like the way they look on this gun.

A great shooter grade Model 27. The 5" barrel is not found that much for sale anymore. People tend to hold onto them. Great price on a fine gun. That one would be a keeper for me. Thanks for showing.

Love those grips, may I ask where you found them and the maker if you know? Think a set would look really good along with this knife (Clay Gault).

Nice pickup, Moo Moo. I would like to add a 5" bbl. to my modest collection of .357 Magnums and Model 27s, but I haven't seen many for sale around my area or even online. A couple of years ago I saw a blued 27-2 at a local gun show for $900 with original box and goodies, but it was wearing later model stocks. I passed...but with regrets. I even have more regrets now! Enjoy!

Great purchase Moo Moo. My 27-2 5" was the 1st Model 27 I bought and at the time didn't realize it was a 5" lol. That was many moons ago. If you are familiar w/the writings of th Great Skeeter Skelton his opinion was the 5" N frame was the best combination for balance& shooting.

Lots of nice guns here, Skeeter would like em all !
For some reason a standard hammer and trigger are my favorite in the five inch.

One in my small LEO collection is this Florida Highway Patrol 5 inch in nickel. It’s a fabulous shooter.
KB, those grips on your blue gun are spectacular.

3-27's
The 5 inch 27-2 on right. 6 inch 27-2 center. 6 1/2 inch 27-1 on left. Tough to beat a 27.

Yep, a lot of really nice 27-2, 5 inchers hear. Mr. Keith Brown's artistry shines through with his.
These two -2s will be on my tables this weekend in Jefferson. They have been inched out by the 5 screw variations in my collection. I can't keep them all, though I would like to.

Nice find! It was research on a 5" mod 27 that led me to this forum back in 2004. A buddy needed a set of tires and offered me his 27-2 5" in presentation box for $500. My message box blew up with emails asking for 2nds if I passed. Of course I bought it - still have it and am addicted to 5" Smiths in general.
My oft posted picture of my favorite 5 incher
most recent is a 27-5
a few 5" mixed in with some mod 28s

5” 27 is as good as it gets. They are cheaper if you buy them in
