There were two of them at our last B'ham show and the sellers were attepting to pawn them off as originals, from the factory. I pointed out to them about the topstrap not lining up.
Mike - this seller is pretty clear and honest in the description about the "custom" gun
It does look cool though!

All of these are factory guns purchased new in the box. The top straps seem to vary considerably. I've never noticed "lining up" in very many K frames.

akviper - everyone of your guns look correct.
When you take a gun and put a barrel from a different gun that didn't belong, it is generally noticeable on the top strap(as the two that I saw this weekend).
The "lining up" I'm refering to are the proper lines that you see on a gun in relationship to it's own frame and barrel lines. (not comparing 2 or more guns side by side)

All yours look the way they are susposed to, as far as I can see. If you ever see a gun where a 4" barrel was traded out for a 2.5", the difference is easily noticed.

I guess lining up is one way and have seen some obvious reworks. Also, the 2 1/2" guns normally have a rear sight assembly that extends to the end of the frame, so it matches up with the rib on the barrel, unlike the 4" and longer guns.
Notice on the two guns to the left of the AKViper's picture, the rear sight assembly goes to the end of the frame. I have a questions on the second gun from the right in that pic, it looks to be RB and maybe (?) a gun that was converted from short barrel to long? The rear sight does extend to the end of the frame, and since one normally doesn't see longer barrel guns with RB gripframe, could it be that?
Just wondering.
The gun in the auction link has a long rear sight, but there are other things that are problematic, like the grips - take a look at the second pic down and notice how badly the grips don't fit, guns of that era should have better fitting grips (bottom rear edge of grips/frame).
There are known SB M19's with short barrels, both 2 1/2" and 3", but they are not common.

Ok, here's the rest of the story.
I thought this was a little different, and the seller was up front about it being a "custom" gun, so I thought I would take a chance. I was thinking about doing a 2 1/2 686 with a square butt, when this one came along. With the prices going up, I'm not sure I could have pulled this off for what I paid for it. In any case, I'm Happy.

The second from right Model 19-3 RB four inch is factory original according to Mr. Jinks. It was covered in an earlier thread.

Hi:
In the era of 1980 (give or take two years) I had a 2 1/2" barrel installed on a SB Model 19 4". I beleive the Gunsmith (retired S&W) changed the rear sight assembly. also ejector assembly(?)
