I just acquired a 2" nickel mod. 36 s/n # 673XX from the wife of a deceased minister, she advised that he purchased the revolver new and it was his "nightstand gun" and the only firearm he ever owned, she gave me what she thinks is the original box of ammo he bought with the gun, there are only 5 rounds missing from the box, I'm thinking the gun is unfired and he took 5 out and loaded it, then when he passed on someone just unloaded it?
Anyway she isn't too sure what year he bought the gun, she thinks late 50's or early 60's, can someone give me a better idea of its age and worth. It is in like new condition.

Wow, didn't dream it could be that old...
What kind of value should I place on it for insurance purposes?
Thanks John.

If it is a "marked" 36 no dash, that is not the serial number or the complete serial number.
Is there a "J" in there? What's stamped on the butt?

I re-checked the # it is as above and also under the grip panel as well, but the # on the butt reads 1837XX, what's up with that number?
And, it is a no dash and I got the s/n from the cylinder pivot hinge and from the frame under the grip.?

they started stamping model 36 inside the yoke cut about 1957.
Do you have a flat latch on the thumb release? How about a large diamond on the grips where the screw goes thru?
The 183xxx number sounds better // 1957 - 1960 somewhere
And to make sure I'm clear, the number is on the edge of the butt frame - you don't have to take the grips off to see it.
All the other numbers are assembly/inspection numbers

The number on the butt is the serial number. Is there a "J" prefix?

The latch is wedge shaped, thicker on the end towards the cylinder, the grips are not the original one's.
So, what's up with it having 2 diffrent #'S on it, I thought that all S&W's were numbered on that pivot hinge that holds the cylinder.

The latch you describe is called a 'flat' latch; there are 3 varieties, ending in 1966 when the more commonly seen latch returned to all J frame guns. The numbers you observed that did not match the serial number are assembly #s the factory used to assemble fitted parts back together after separately being blued. Guns earlier than yours have the serial number on all major parts including the crane, but you can only see the # on the crane if you look thru one of the chambers with a flashlight. Around the time, 1957, that Model numbers commenced being stamped in the yoke, serial #s were no longer stamped anywhere except on the bottom of the gun butt.

Guy's, thanks for all the good information, I'm so glad I found this forum.
Truly a great source for information on S&W's.
