Acquired S&W 28-2
Just wanted to share. I still consider myself as a new member to this forum and really enjoy the information that everyone gives. After collecting several 22's and 38's I wanted a 357 and came across this one. Not rare but in fairly good condition and will enjoy shooting. # S275XXX Most likely c. 1966 Stocks don't match SN.
Regards,
LCR

A very nice Model 28 you have. Despite not having the original stocks, the pair you have on the piece would have been the correct standard grips for the revolver. Mine didn't have wood stocks when I bought it, so I had to put some Altamont wood on it that at least looked better than the ugly Pachmayr grips that were on it.

Nice get. I have a four inch model and it is terrific. Also don't have the original stocks but has no effect on the joy of ownership. I still keep looking to pick off a 6" version some day.
This one shipped in Nov 1962

I have one from the same period, shipped 1~2 years before yours, S251xxx. I was told it most likely shipped 1965~66, a calendar year later than the SCSW shows. I shoot it with target stocks. Those were listed in the catalog as an option at that time (mine are the later version, 1970's vintage). Shown on top in the pic below. It is about my favorite gun to shoot, from that period at least). Makes any .38 seem like you are shooting wadcutters, and it keeps the flash from modern 357 Magnum ammo to a minimum, .
The grips it most likely shipped with were Diamond Magnas (shown in the pic lower right).
If you really want period-correct Diamond Magnas for historical reasons, they are readily available on Ebay and elsewhere, at a price. I used Smooth Altamont finger groove grips on mine for a while. Also great looking, and those sell fro $50~70 on ebay,

Congrats on a very nice acquisition. Looks to be in really good shape, and it's an S!. Yeah, too bad these older guns get stripped of their diamond stocks so the former owner can make a few more bucks selling them separately. You'll find a set soon enough, just don't let the "sticker shock" put you off. I gave $145 for a set of 1980 PC magnas a couple of months ago for one of my revolvers that had the originals swapped out before I bought it, a set of diamond magnas will be more than that, I'm afraid.
I've got a M28-2 from 1973, looks just like yours, and it's my favorite range revolver.

Definitely was not a safe queen, but that 6-inch Model 28-2 should be a fine shooter.

My Highway Patrolman (pre-model 28) shipped in 1954. It’s a birth year revolver and a keeper.
They are amazing pieces of S&W design and engineering and stand tall even to this day of striker fired 9s…..

5" 27-2
This goes along with LCR's 28-2. It's one of several a fellow is selling to liquidate his late cousin's estate. More to come.
The stocks are not original but that's OK. Great shooter grade from 1973.
Oops. Thought I was starting a new thread.

Great looking gun!
For some reason I never bought one of those, even though I wanted one. I probably missed my chance, as for a while they were under valued.
That has righted its self, and they are not the bargain that they were a few years ago.

Very nice early 6" Model 28-2! Lots of Highway Patrolman fans here on the Forum, so you're in good company. Here's my modest collection of HPs...except for my birthyear/first year HP (1954), my 28-2s are all N-prefix s/n's from 1974-1977. You will definitely enjoy shooting yours!
