SW 10-5 came home from auction
Went to a auction but I did not see the SW they advertised without model number. You had to ask to see any handguns. Out came the blue box with packing tape wrapped around it. Not looking good. Box label said 10-5. Opened box and the gun was in outstanding condition 99%. I did not even want to try the action. Opened cylinder and you could barely see the test fire ring on every other chamber. Needed to come home with me.
Auction started badly when someone paid $895 for a post 64 Winchester 94 carbine. Cut the story short. I paid $600 total for a 99% gun with original box, paper work, sealed cleaning rod and brush, grips match. Box cleaned up very nice. I know how to get tape off without ruining boxes. Gun marked 10-5 S/N D518647 1973-74? Seems late for 10-5 Light spot on side is flash. Fair price

Every time I see these prices on plain old mod-10s, I have to remember how old I am, and that they dont make them like this anymore, And probably couldnt if they wanted to. To OP, nice snag.

Great looking gun and I have the same thoughts these days. While no where near the condition of this example, I still feel like it wasn’t that long ago finding a shooter grade model 10 for $200 bucks or less was easy. In reality we are talking almost 20 years ago now ( that is the last time I bought a model 10 - a used cop gun in shooter grade condition - in 2005 for $165) at the time, the dealer had a plastic bin full of model tens and told me if I bought 2 or more they would drop the price to $150 each. Hindsight and all, but should have made a deal for the entire bin

Congratulations!! Great snag on a beautiful, 40 year old model 10 with all the goodies. IMHO, that was on the lower end price wise too.

Ship date sounds OK to me...very nice score!
I've got one 10-5 left, sold the other 2 but your ship date sounds OK to me based on Roy telling me when mine left.
10-5 4" Blue s/n D 531562 shipped June 1973 (left pic)
10-5 4" Blue s/n D 464952 shipped 1972 (middle pic)
10-5 4" Nickel s/n D 989015 shipped 1977 (right pic)
You really scored at $600 for mint plus box and goodies! If you don't mind please share your tip on removing tape without harming the box. I've come across several that otherwise would have been great finds but the tape kinda ruins it, especially if applied over the factory end label.

To MajorD, you must be looking at 80 years old. Like me. Sold my first m-10 at a hardware store in my town for around $72. I think it was 1964.
Like you remember seeing baskets of m-10s , police surplus. One shop had a sign, "please buy two".

The year was 1989. LGS store ran an ad for police turn in Smiths. 4" Model 15s for $149.00. They had 2 large carboard boxes full of them. I only bought 1.

You got a bargain! Well done. In my mind you cannot go wrong with any model 10---one of my all time favorite revolvers!
