I have a model 49 no dash e screw pinned barrel 38spl serial number 12JXXX just trying to figure out the year it was made

Looks like one from the "floating J" period of 1971-72 that went from 1J1 to 999J99, 6 digits including the J.

According to S&W Historian Dr. Roy Jinks, the "roving J series" serial numbers began in 1970 and ended in 1973. Sandwiched amid two to five digits, one to three digits before it and one to four after it, the J made its methodical march to the right. Serial number 9J9999 preceded 10J1, serial number 99J999 preceded 100J1 and so forth. The earliest known ship date is April 1970.

S&W likely shipped your 12Jxxx Model 49 in spring 1971.

In that sort of condition showing edge wear it seems they sell for around $550 - $750.

My model 36 is also a rover, it has a four digit serial number “2J14”. Any guesses on a ship date ?
