I know that there are many historians on this forum. So, I'll pose this...
I'm curious as to what notorious moments in American history occurred when a Smith & Wesson double action revolver was present(ed).
Let's hear about them.

I don't know about history, but Pancho Villa had one. General Patton had a registered Magnum, (overshadowed by his Colt SAA).

Lee Harvey Oswald used a .38 M&P, a Victory if I remember, to shoot Officer J.D.Tippet in a theater after shooting JFK.

Didn't Virgil Earp carry a S&W Schofield?
Wyatt owned a No. 3 American given to him by John P. Clum.
Cody was a big advocate of the No.3. He was a big help in getting the Russian model sold. I think the order was for 215,704 guns.

Hermann Goering surrendered to US troops while wearing his .38 M&P. Has a four-inch barrel.
Some waist gunner on a B-17 shot down an ME-109 with a S&W .38. He ran out of .50 cal. ammo for his machine gun, and was desperate, I guess.Frontal shot, that somehow got through the prop arc on the Messerschmidt. Wish I could recall where I read that.

I remember seeing the film of Goring surrendering the S&W. He pulled it out of his holster and put it on the table. A U.S. officer picked it up right away and looked at it like "what the hell?"

Frank James, brother of Jesse, favored a .44 S&W.

There is a reprint of the newspaper article in Charlie Pate's "Secondary Pistols and Revolvers of WWII."

The infamous FBI Miami shootout. FBI agents outmanned two BG's 4-1.
Agents were armed with S&W .357's (Models 13 & 19) using .38 +P.
2 FBI agents died, along with both perps. Lead directly to replacement of revolvers with autos.

Although it did not take place in America...
How about the infamous photo taken of a South Vietnamese general using a Smith & Wesson Bodyguard (M38 or M49?) to execute a Vietcong guerrilla in Saigon during the Tet Offensive.
I've read that S&W J-frames were highly sought after by the upper echelon in the South Vietnamese ranks in that conflict.

Yeah. Gen. Loan. His gun had stag or Franzite pseudostag grips, I think. I recall that photo well. The liberal media made a big deal of it.
It appeared in, "Life" and other famous titles.
Brad-
Thanks for the info on the airman who shot down the ME-109 being in that book. I really should get a copy. Does anyone know who sells it and the cost?
Thanks,

Gift from S&W to Ronald Reagan
This Smith didn't play a part in American history but it honors a President who most definetly did.

James gang member Charlie Pitts had a S&W DA .44 on him when he was killed by a posse in a Minnesota swamp after the disasterous Northfield robbery attempt, IIRC. The Younger brothers were captured after being badly shot up in the gunbattle. I'm sure more than one Smith revolver was present.

Also, from what I've read, both President John F. Kennedy and President George H.W. Bush carried Smith & Wesson M&P Victory models in .38 Special during their time in the Pacific during World War Two.

A little macabre, but I like it.
I hate Starbuck's coffee, by the way. Awful stuff!
