Just picked up a new model 14-4, serial #83K7220, I was wondering if anyone would know the year of manufacture and if these guns have any collector value. This gun appears to be 100% and un-fired with no box.

1980.

I have one very, very close to it. It was my first handgun I got new, a gift from my Dad, so it has "priceless" collector value to me!

I have been watching gun show dealers trading a NIB 14-4 back and forth for about a year now.

I first saw it in a local gun store for $400. It sold before I could come up with the money.

I saw it two weeks later at at a gun show for $600.00
A few weeks later at another gun show a different dealer had it for $800.00.

As far as I know he still has it.

I picked up a pristine specimen at a local auction without a box or accouterments for $325.00 a couple of months ago.

Mine is a dead ringer for yours.

I guess what I want to know is should I just go ahead and start shooting it or would it be best to sell it to a collector. I don't want to shoot a collectable gun in this condition if I would be better served finding a shooter and letting this one go.

That's a dilemma we all go through which is shoot it not shoot. I bought a 14-4 with an 8 3/8 barrel that came with the box, tool kit, paperwork and correct grips. The gun looks like it’s unfired except for at the factory and virtually looks mint. I paid $495 for the gun and I'm thinking I should shoot it because they aren't all that scare or valuable.

I have a K38 5 screw pre 14 with a 6 inch barrel that’s a 99% gun and I probably won’t shoot that one. The prices are really moving up on mint S&W revolvers though especially with all the goodies with them.

Since I don't have box or accessories, mine will be a shooter, but I don't have any guns that a collector would want.

I know that don't help much.

My opinion and $2.00 might buy you a cup of coffee.

I have tried to match all of my collector Smith's with shooter grades...... you can find them if you take your time and watch your dollars

You may be surprised. Many "collectors" collect shooter models, not just pristine guns.

Give us most of the serial number and the date will be narrowed down pretty close for you. If you wish, use X's for the last two or three numbers. One or several of us will give a date range.....

Hello Keith, a real beauty. Im not a collector. A really old shooter.
Follow the path of your intent when you bought it. Stick it in a safe or shoot, clean and repeat. I have one I shoot the poop out of and clean and looks 98%. Best.

I must be looking in the wrong places! Been hoping to find a nice 6" high condition M14 shooter with TT & TH at reasonable price. Seems that most being offered are low condition guns with no options. Question: we're any early 14's offered with recessed chambers? Congrats on nice finds!

No. The Model 14 was chambered for the .38 S&W Special cartridge. S&W only used counter-bored charge holes on rimfire revolvers and those chambered for magnum cartridges like the .357, .41 and .44 Magnums.

If I am reading my "Standard Catalog" correctly your revolver was
shipped in 1980. I have a Model 14-2 with a six inch barrel and it
is the best shooting revolver I have ever owned.

It is amazing when a March, 2009 thread comes back to life! Oh well, I like the subject. 14's are just fine shooters. I have a 14-3 from 1977. I got it off of GB, for $410 shipped & insured. Condition was more than satisfactory. Fun with 148 gr. wad cutters! There are some reasonably priced examples out there. Bob

I picked up a 14-3 six inch a couple weeks ago and really like it. TT and TH, locks up tight, ever so slight a turn ring and slight muzzle wear on one side. $325 out the door. Even a blind hog finds an acorn sometimes.

I just bought a model 14-4 off of gunbroker.

Should be here in a week.

It's a shooter and I'm using it for ICORE.

I have a preference for blue guns. I sold all my stainless revolvers a few years ago and replaced them with blued guns. I lost out on a couple of 585's but am really happy with the gun I got.

I just noticed this was an old thread, but I also noticed that the old pictures are just as great as the latest. I love em.
