Does anyone know what type of metal finish S&W used on the aluminum frame of the Model 12? It's very shiny and looks like nicely blued steel.

As Alan stated, S&W revolvers having an aluminum alloy frame were anodized. Aluminum doesn't take bluing.

Since you correctly mentioned only the frame, I assume you know that the barrel and cylinder are made of steel on the Model 12. Those parts are blued.

As is the crane/yoke

This one is a bit older. My Airweight M&P has an aluminium cylinder that nicely matches it's frame.

Any of the dark colored Airweights, regardless of their frame size, will have a color mismatch when looking at the alloy frame in comparison to the steel parts

The only ones that look good across all parts are the nickel guns. I love the look of my satin nickel 442

Pretty sure the black coating on Model 12 and Model 37 aluminum parts is black paint. It's darker than typical anodizing and chips / wears easily. It seems a bit early for powder coating.

But it can be a bit hard to tell at times...the barrel looks different , but the cylinder looks very close.

It’s more than just the black color. Notice the difference in light reflection between the high gloss blue parts and satin anodized alloy frame finish.
