guys,
i have a friend who asked me to give him a value of his gun. i admit i know very litle about the model 53.
here it is
model 53 no dash 4 screw 6 inch barrel
6 22 lr inserts the later model you can pull out easy
2x luepold scope and buhler mount
2 1/2 boxes of peters ammo
1/2 box of fired shell casings
i set of rcbs loading dies.
diamond target grips, the owner dished out the thumb relief a little so they are not full value.
cosmetically, the gun hardly has a turn line..
just about zero barrel end wear.
some small nics, i would put cosmetic wear at 95 to 96 % conservatively
what is a good price range to tell him.
thanks for any advice folks, he needs the money, but also wants to be fair.
i think the gun has only shot the 18 rounds, it looks that new on the recoil sheild and barel

Was the frame drilled for this application?
Is there a box, paperwork, tools or auxilliary 22lr cylinder?

My estimate is $750-1100, with the large swing in price owing to if its been drilled or not. Add another $100 for all the ammo, brass & dies.

To replace the factory ammo[yes, its not made anymore] would easily run over $1.00/round so the ammo has quite a bit of value to someone that want to shoot their 53 without resorting to aftermarket ammo or reloads.

Figure a used 2x Leupold scope at $125 with mount. 132 rounds of ammo, doesn't matter if it costs $1 per round to replace, we're talking used sale here...therefore, no more than 50% of full value = .50 cents per round MAX. Used 22 Jet dies figure $25-30 max. YMMV

drilled and tapped jets have almost no collector value. would be whatever someone would pay for a what sounds like a real nice shooter. think earlier values given for dies, ammo, scope and mt. to be right. just my opinion of course. easy to find jets that have been drilled and tapped. happened a lot back in the day. some for sale on various boards right now.

Agreed, I wouldn't give 2 cents for a drilled and tapped JET.-Dick

Maybe a Refinished Jet has no value, but think about it, the Drilled and Tapped jet is still worth the sum of it's parts, and they would be original. Someday you may be looking for that 22 Jet cylinder, or barrel in mint condition.
True the altered gun has no collector value, people paying up to $400.00 for a 22LR Cylinder for the Jet, the Jet cylinders are more scarce than the LR cylinders.

FWIW...I sold two boxes of .22 Jet ammo on GunBroker last year...sold the first box for $94.00. Told the buyer I had a second box and he sent me a check for $200.00 for both boxes.
The serial number indicates a first year of production M53. Too bad the grips were modified as they alone will sometimes bring $100.00.
If the package was put togeather back in the 60s there is a possibility that the gun was not D&T. Some of the Buhler mounts for low recoiling guns didn't require D&Ting the frame to mount. The Leupold scope could be one of the first Intermediate Eye Relief scopes...not a pistol Long Eye Relief scope. Easy to tell the difference...the ocular bell is not adjustable. I have two of them on Scout Rifles which is what they originally designed for...forward mounting on the Remington M600 out on the rib and the Winchester 94 using the Leupold Detacho Mount.
Hard to say, but if it was me I would probably part out everything to get the most money out of the deal.

If my memory serves me correctly, the sight on a 53 is the same, but the screw hole position may be different than a non-53 K frame. While relocation of the rear sight leaf screw occured in 1967 on K frames, the 53 (which was introduced in 1961) already had the sight leaf screw FORWARD of the forcing cone/cylinder gap. So, if you by chance obtain a rear sight from a pre-1967 K frame, it will not bolt onto a 53 due to the screw hole alignment.

KEN, ITS REALLY INTERESTING. the factory screw hole is right above the forcing cone. . in fact, the hole goes all the way through the top strap. you can see the hole when looking at bottom of top strap above the forcing cone. did sw drill this all the way through or would a gunsmith have drilled all the way through i dont know if that was factory or not. the owner of gun and i rummaged through our dealers parts stuff yesterday.. we found a new k frame leaf sight.when putting the front hole of the leaf sight over the front factory hole on the top strap of gun, the rear of sight would not fit down on the frame, it was about 1/4 inch to short. the rear sight was sitting on top of the back of gun., its really weird.. theats why i asked if allk frame rear sight assemblys were the same length.i appreciate the advice.

Hmmm, I know the screw hole placement is different, but now I'm not so sure about the overall LENGTH of a 53 sight as compared to a non-53 K frame (eg: 14, 17, etc.). Guess I'll have to dig out my 53 and compare it to another K frame!
