Hi All, I just put a 28-2 sn# S327xxx on layaway. I think the sn# makes it a 1968 manufacture, would it have had diamond grips? It has some after market, thumb rest, target grips on it right now.
Thanks,
Tom

Tom,
I believe your 28 would be one of the early guns wearing non-diamond magnas. I think the change occurred a year earlier. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm mistaken.
Post some pictures of that gun when you get it. There are lots of Model 28 fans on the Forum.

Do the grips look anything like these? Someone gave them to me and I have no idea who makes them.

I have S 298434 and it came with non-diamond Magnas. I believe yours likely did, too as it is a bit later in production.
Another member here posted his gun with a serial less than 100 earlier than mine and it had diamond stocks so I think the change was made right around that time. Larry's S291,000 suggests both were being shipped for some time as inventories were used up.

ThanKs for the replies. I picked up the 28 out of layaway yesterday, after one day. I just ain't good at letting guns on layaway, I like to have my toys in hand. It has a 6in barrel a slight turn line and a little holster wear at the muzzle, and locks up tighter than any other Smith I have. The grips look like Texagun's only the left grip has a shelf for your thumb, target style I guess. I have no idea who made them either, can't find any markings on them. I think they are quite impractical as they obstruct the extractor . I will try some pictures when I get a chance.

Thanks Bimmer. My buddy bought these at a gun show. The guy told him they were for a K-frame. Of course they didn't fit his gun so he gave them to me and I threw them in a box. My Model 28 came with Packmayers, so I tried these and they fit perfectly. I'm glad to know who made them.

Magna stocks (N-frame) had the diamond deleted prior to serial number S285000, so your 28-2 would not have a diamond around the escutcheons.
