I have a early 80's 3T's Model 17 with a 8 3/8" bbl. Accurate doesn't do it justice. Anyone who has ever shot it wanted to buy it.

I only have two long barreled S&W's. The 500 S&W and the 460 S&W. All my other Smith's suffer from barrel envy!

I can't believe the favorite S&W I have ever owned isn't represented here. I the late '80s, S&W was pushing a custom order program. I ordered a 8 3/8" 686 with target hammer/trigger, wood target grips and a 4 position adjustable FRONT sight. Had to sell it to cover medical bills. Must be rare as I haven't been able to find one like it since. Very accurate. Used it to teach my sons to shoot. I still miss that revolver.

I'm a fan of the long barrel big bores too.
Here's a Feb 1976, 29-2. I bought this at a show last year to replace one I had bought in 1976 but let get away. Feels like it never left!
I load moderate loads with Unique and 240 Gr. SWC. I have to laugh when I go to the range with it. All the plastic shooters end up stopping by to see what's making all the noise.

...have been a S&W owner since 1970 and just never got around to buying a long barrel. Not even sure I ever even shot one till just a few years ago.
But as .41 Magnum was my favorite caliber I finally succumbed after finding two very cheaply priced 657s within a short period of time...
I sold one of them to a friend after bidding on a 70s vintage 57 8 3/8 that no one wanted because it was D&T for a scope... When the gun arrived I was amazed to find that whoever the smith was who did the job DIDN'T PUNCH THE HOLES all the way through the frame! So when the rear sight is in place it looks all original.
Then came a 27-2 that I bought because some nice person replaced the Magna's with a set of Cokes!! Replaced the grips with Magnas and sold it for more than I bought the gun for...
The Cokes now reside on a 1964 M58...
My final long gun was a unfired 70s vintage M57 nickel in the PC...I had it for about a year before selling it...still unfired for someone else to appreciate...
So I have one blue and one stainless .41 Magnum and that will probably be about it for long barrels....although I might consider a M48 at the right price...

They are an abomination. A freak of gun-dom. Usless for any utility.
The only people who can carry them concealed are NBA athletes.
They won't "twirl" like a 4 3/4 Colt S/A.
As a hunting tool they spook game when drawn.
As a fighting handgun they are too slow to "present" as the modern day "experts" say.
About the only good use I can see for them is that they make great tools for twisting loose fence-wire.
Here's one of mine! A M29-2. And I have an 8 3/8 M27-2 that I want to load full house 125 grain and 110 grain loads in and see how fast they will go. I also want a pristine M57 in nickel. And I have, after this thread, FOUND ANOTHER EXCUSE FOR ANOTHER S&W!!! How 'bout this? An 8 3/8 M48 in .22 magnum. I was looking for an excuse to have a .22 magnum now ya'll have given me one. This forum is great!

Yep, semperfi71 .... They do work great to tighten up barbed wire. They also make great bumper jack handles and you can pound the barrel into the ground to hook your winch cable to when ya get stuck. It usually doesn't bend it too much and sometimes you can just shoot the mud out of the barrel when yer done.
Some say it's a great nose picker too.... but only if ya get a Patridge front blade on it and have large nostrils.... My wife uses one to press raw meat into the meat grinder.... There just ain't no barrel length as useful as the 8 3/8......  I love the 8 3/8 Mags! Been hunting with them for 35 years...

Jeff Cooper shot one in .44 Magnum. He claimed it tamed the hottest .44 loads available. I agree, full house .44 Magnum reloads in mine are quite comfortable.

Finally, a post I can actually respond to! Call it "Barrel Envy" or whatever, but I have always loved the 8 3/8" Smiths. I'm a big guy with big hands and they just feel "right" to me. They also look cool. I have the following, all with 8 3/8" tubes:

Shortly after joining this forum, and subsequently running across this thread, I procured this Model 14-2 from 19 and 66:

The old Smith & Wesson's are like fine artwork in your hand, the blued polish is SO clean and crisp, the metal parts seem to flow into one another seamlessly, and this one I am especially proud of (it's my first 8-3/8-incher, but assuredly NOT my LAST!); she averaged about .500" groups at 23 yards at the indoor range I frequent, and she will live a good, long life, laying on crushed red velvet in my safe, completely cleaned after every range session, and fed a steady diet of 148-grain HBWC's stuffed with 3.2 grains of Win231.

I'm adding a Model 27-2, 8 3/8ths to my collection. 98% condition in presentation box with all the tools and papers. Picking it up next week. Will post pix when I get it home. It joins a Model 617 (no dash) 8 3/8ths I've had since 1989. I love long barreled Smiths!

OK, now ya got me on the hunt for my first 8 3/8 barreled Smith. Gotta finish paying for the 629 first, but in the mean time, I have been looking. (Which always seems to lead to buying somehow!)
Looking at an 8 3/8" nickled Model 57. Seller says it is recessed, but not pinned, early 80's. The book says that in 1982, the 57-1 eliminated the recessed cylinder and pinned barrel. I am assuming that the fact that this gun has one but not the other is probably do to the penchant for Smith to use up what it had on hand, so an older recessed cylinder was used for a newer 57-1 frame and barrel. Does that sound logical to you folks as well? Probably not going to be able to get this one, but every day is a learning experience.
Interested in finding out if my thoughts on this are possible. Thanks.

I can't believe that I've never seen this thread. I love 8 3/8" S&W's! Of course being 6'5" and about 350, even an 8 3/8" in my hands looks and feels like a 4"-6" in the average size shooter. Here's a few of mine: a Model 27; 25 & 17. I haven't received it yet but a big 629 is on its' way. I have a 6" 29, but I always wanted a BIG .44 Mag!
