I only own and have only ever owned 1 S&W revolver in 8 3/8" length, a Model 29-2. It actually came to me as a 4", but I was dabbling with handgun silhouette back in the early '80s and felt I needed more sight radius, so I bought a long tube and had it installed. I really enjoyed pulling out that old piece of artillery at matches, but it really isn't as practical as I would have hoped for other occasions, and I almost wish now I had left well enough alone. (The original barrel seems to have disappeared into the mists of time.) If I had it to do over again I probably would use a 6 or 6 1/2" barrel and be shooting it more, but that long tube does have a sort of aura about it, doesn't it?

Here in "gun loving" calif. it is almost impossible to get a concealed carry permit, so no real advantage to snub guns. Might as well get a 6" or 8' which is easier to aim at home without using the sights. Or when you are still half-asleep and can't align the sights.

I did notice one old top-break, so apparently this thread is not limited
to all this new stuff. Herewith is a Model of 1899 with an 8-inch
barrel. It was used in the 1908 Olympics.

This is great forum. Just recently we had 3 inch 'N' frame mania, now long barrels. Variety IS the spice of life!

Model 48 no dash WMR, circa 1959, 4-screw, 8 3/8" barrel, Baughman front sight, .500" wide serrated hammer, .500" wide serrated trigger (although SCSW mentions the optional .400" mine measures 1/2"). Later version smooth target stocks came with the gun - I replaced them with appropriate diamond targets.

Have never had one...But have lusted after a 57 and passed on a 25-5 that I kick myself over not getting it...It was $400, guy came down to $350 and I thought that was still too high...about 6 years ago...I'm a dummy...should have owned that one.

I am still looking for the 57 and still looking for a 25-5...I have bot of thos guns in 4" models..but the long barrels call to me

When I purchased my blue 17-4 from a local gunshop, it came with a extra .22 Mag. cylinder (fluted). I've used it plenty, shoots fine. Did the factory ever do this with the Model 17 or is this a "homemade convertible"?

I also like the longer barrels. I have a 27-2, K38, K22, all in the 8-3/8 barrel from about 1980. Sorry no pictures.

I have a 8 3/8" 17-3,14-4 and a Dan Wesson 15-2 8" and a Dan Wesson 744 stainless with a 10" tube. Had a DW with the 15" barrel some years ago and like an idiot sold it..
Like to go the the range and when the range goes cold walk out and set up some 50,75 and 100 yard targets (clay pigeons), and watch the look on the springs and plastic crowd when I start bringing out the long tubes and start busting them.

Started out in the 70s with this one. Had a choice of it or a 4" one. Should have gotten both!
Used it for a lot of desert walks and hunting then got into the silhouette game at which it did quite well.


17-4 came along during the silhouette days. It really slammed those little rams at 100 meters:


14-4 was in the dealer's case at the same time, so why not?


Finally found a decent P&R 629 to add to the stable. It was a bit nicked up, so gave it a complete rubdown:

I missed your response about the 8" 1899. There were two built special-order; this
one and a nickel one. This one was shipped to a doctor in New York, who used it
in the 1908 Olympics. The nickel one was delivered to Charlie Call, in the factory.

I shot Smith for almost 40 years before I finally bought my first one...a 657...than found another...but sold one to a friend...





..had an unfired in the PC nickel also...



...but was too nice to shoot so I sold it...

But recently found another 1974 shooter....





Also have a 57 blue made in the 70s but no pics...

Bought this 27-2 a few years ago cheap...the dealer apologized as the original numbered to the gun grips had been replaced with an older set of "Targets"..so he discounted it to me...the "Targets" of couse ended up being Cokes... Put some correct for the period Magnas on and put the Cokes where they beloneged...on a 1964 4" 57....and sold the gun for more than I paid for it...




Last year found a nice 48 and a friend came up with a .22 LR cylinder...it shoots like a rifle with both rounds...

I had always wanted an 8 3/8" S&W for as long as I can remember. A number of years ago I purchased a 6" 629 which was practical but just didn't scratch 'the itch'. Neither did its replacement, a 7.5" Ruger .454. So earlier this year I finally got what I should have started with, an 8 3/8" 25-5 in .45 Colt. Finally, this is the gun that really does it for me. I'll see about getting around to taking some pics & posting them.

I found out only a few weeks ago that the Smith & Wesson M-15 was also available with an 8-3/8 barrel but this forum is the only place I’ve ever seen one. *Edit* I acquired a Model 15-5 in 8-3/8 in April 2019.

Saw one of those 15" DW's at a local shop last weekend , never knew there was such a thing.Can't believe they made many of those.They were asking $750. Seemed high for a DW. It would look nice next to my Colt buntline, 10 5/8 M29,10"Fa 83,10"Ruger BH 357 and12" Virginian Dragoon. Spent all my $ on guns, can't aford camara to post pics!

I bought the gun originally with an 8" barrel - it was the first gun I ever bought all on my own. I was in college and the first Saturday after I turned 21 in 1978 I went down to Southwest Shooters in Oklahoma City. I had already picked this out as the gun I was going to buy, after a lengthy winnowing process. I believe it was $160 plus tax.

The 15" barrel I bought many years later, don't recall exactly when or where, but I think it was about $120.

I've only owned one long barrelled Smith, a 29-2 I picked up a week or so ago.



As a Canuck who got into the game after laws changed, I cannot legally own a 4" pistol. I bought this one with plans to cut it down to 4.25" (minimum legal length). I suppose this might be considered heresy, but I have to be honest, a shorter barrel is more appealing to me.

Plus, the barrel is less than perfect with a ring around the outside, so I figure its better than doing it to a flawless example.
