Dealer had it selling for $395. Got him down to $300 so I bought it. My friends tell me you should have at least 1 revolver. It's a Model 686-3 .357 Magnum with the serial begining with BES78??. Looks to have been fired very little! Can anyone tell me when this was manufactured?

There is alot to the argument or statement that if you could only have one gun it would be a medium frame S&W with four inch. It has everything: Power with magnums, easy and less costly practice with 38s, large enough for duty and serious accuracy, small enough to be concealed if need be, stainless for lower maintenance, adjustable sights to dial in for your load of choice - not sure if I missed anything - oh yeah - congratulations on your acquisition!

400 bones? Good price. Looks like a quality, good condition gun too. You got a good deal.

It's also gorgeous - those wood stocks are FANTASTIC!

Not sure, but believe your 686 was issued in 1989.

Excellent choice and for $300 you can't beat it, no lock, firing pin on hammer and a 686, my favorite.

I noticed that the 686-3 (pictured) has S/S trigger & hammer. Is this common with all 686's that are -3 & earlier. I ask this because my 686-4 has ordinary steel trigger/hammer.

And to the original poster. Nice job, you got a great deal on a great revolver. My 686(-4) was also my first revolver.

The gun looks to be in fantastic shape. My 686 is a snub nose (2"bbl). I love it, but now want one with a 4" bbl. Finding them at the price you found that one is near impossible! Great gun and great price. Don't be afraid to shoot the snot out of it, as it is a very strong revolver. Best of luck with it.

You should send the gun to me free of charge. That way your addiction to S&W wheel guns will be stopped before it sets in to deep. Just chalk up the lost money as a lesson learned.

Pretty funny - and probably true!

That's a great looking revolver you have there and you got a very good price on it. What a way to start! Conratulations on a great purchase!

Congrats, you have a very nice wheel gun right there. I have one just like it, but yours is a little nicer. I call it my utility gun because of it's durability and versatility.

For my money the 686 is the perfect revolver. It's rugged, easy to clean, and wickedly accurate. A 4" 686 would be my choice if I were told that I could have only one gun. Congratulations. Now go and shoot the daylights out of it! You'll wear out long before it will.

Excellent gun at a great price. I bought one this summer and I love it. You did very well your first time out.

Now of course, the K-frame sickness will set in followed by N-frameitus. The only known cure is a second job or a very understanding significanty other.

BTW, I think that the hammer and trigger are hard-chromed, not stainless steel.
