I have an opportunity to buy a couple of Smith & Wessons that I found at a Pawn shop. I know the manager of the shop and he put them on hold for me until tomorrow, so I need to make a decision tonight on whether or not to buy them tomorrow. I'm pretty sure they won't be there long if I don't...but I thought I would check with you guys before hand to make sure.

Model 586-3 in .357 Mag. with 6" bbl. blued in solid 95%+ condition and super tight lock up with absolutely no cyl. slop in any direction. Adjustable rear sight with red insert ramp front sight. NO holster wear at all. Original walnut checkered grips and it's the older style of hammer with the pivoting firing pin. SN: BNZ1595. They are asking $350.

The other one is a .38 Spl. with a 4" bbl. and older 3 screw style frame pannel with pinned bbl. It didn't say what model it was (this is a bit older than the first one I mentioned, but I don't know how old). The info stamped in the cyl crane is: 1(with a circle around it), then 4, then 3. Next line: 62743 DE. The last E really looked like a sideways W next to the D. It has adjustable rear sight and regular ramp front with no plastic insert, and the gun is in about 85% condition--I base that on the normal average amount of holster wear (really only on the bbl. end, not much elsewhere). It also doesn't have an under-lug at all. The gun is very tight, although not 100% tight lock-up like the first one is. It compares to what the average Smith & Wesson is like in new condition these days. They're asking $200 for it.

I have bought a number of guns from this shop and kind of know the manager. He's really friendly with me and usually give me about 10%-20% off if I ask nicely and chat with him for awhile....so that's obviously what I'd be doing if I buy these.

Any input on if these are "not-to-be-walked-away-from" deals or if they are just asking about what they are worth? I would consider myself a very amateur S&W collector (I have about 10 of them) and really value the wealth of knowledge I've acquired here. I really appreciate any input you can give me regarding these two fine revolvers.

Buy both and worry about the $ later!
# inside crane means nothing, Need # on bottom of grip frame.
Peter.
Or email me and I will buy both, Or the $200 one!

I am more of a novice/casual collector myself, but here is what I think. I Don't know about the .38 without a more recognizable model number, but anythint SW that shoots is worth more than $200 in my book. As to 586, I just bought one from an individual for $400 and thought I did really well. Looking on some auction sites, they run $475 to $550, so I think at $350, you should be there first thing in the morning.

Buy them both. The 586 is a smoking deal at $350.00. The other one sounds like a pre-modle 10. Don't pass them up.

Be there early to help him open his shop and thank him for calling you on these deals and grab both of them. You can get your money back any time you want.

Yes buy them both. The one without a model # means it is a pre 1958 model. What yo pay for them both with your discount is what you would normally pay for the 586.

Be really friendly and chat with him all he wants! Also, tell him you will take both as a package deal if you get the upper end of the discount range (20%).

That means
Total price ......... $550
20% discount ..... $110
Out the Door ...... $440

(Well, probably need to pay tax, but still ...)

If you can spare the money, you will not regret it.

Chat with him and buy his lunch! Monday mornings are a great time to deal with a pawn shop. Something about the first sale of the week makes them happy.

The 586-3 is a very good deal. I'd snag it.
Before jumping on it though, check the barrel for any bulging. Lightly run your fingers down the barrel to sense any distortion or bulge. Look down the bore for a shadowy ring partway inside. Also check the topstrap for flame cutting.

The other gun you describe sounds like a Pre-Model 15 Combat Masterpiece.

It should look something like this...

These come with Magna grips originally (mine shows target grips). These are excellent shooters and for $200 will make an excellent addition to your collection. Many police departments issued these to officers between 1955 and 1980.

Are you back with them yet? If you have the cash buy both, best savings account you will ever have if you take care of them. Every time you pull them out just think about 100 dollars bills .

The .38 spl. looks exactly like the one BillCa posted a picture of. (Thanks for the helping hand BillCa!)...Even has the same type of grips on it. I went back and bought them both the next morning and they are beautiful! The 586 is in a little bitter condition than I originally thought (just about like new, only with a very light cylinder ring--and man does it lock up tight!) and the other one is at least 85%+. They are going to a good home, I can tell you that much. I also picked up a CZ 75 compact in 9mm NIB at the same time for too cheap to pass up. I have kind of been keeping an eye out for a quality all-metal 9mm that is small enough to carry without looking like some kind of rent-a-cop. It will most likely not take the place of my chief's special any time soon as my primary CC piece but will be a fun shooter at the range....along with the rest of my goodies. Now I need to get a die set for 9mm. I've been trying to take on reloading for too many new cartridges lately. I know that 9mm is cheap...but I get some kicks out of shooting my own stuff.

Three quality guns in one score. Now that's what shopping is all about!
