The three inch has been my most-favorite of the K-frames. Perfect balance, much better ballistics than the 2". Had four of them over the years, (2-64s, 1-65, 1-M13). And do I ever kick myself for selling them. But, then again, y'all know how that is....
But, y'know, when I think about it, I did the most shooting (and the best shooting) with a garden-variety M64 4". Simplest must be best.

I SOOO want one! Never even seen one! For me, a square butt M&P with a 3" tapered barrel would be the ultimate. If only such a thing had been made with an ejector shroud, then you'd have K-Frame Perfection!!!

Great old thread...here's my two 3" .38s to keep it going. Top is a 10-8, modified by the LAPD Armory, bottom a 3" Australian over-run that never made it down there, with box and papers. The Aussie gun wears Kuracs.

I plead 'No Contest' with Smithnut's amazing collection. The only 3-inchers I've had are these
Model 547 (Hogues for shooting, original stocks set aside.)
Model 65-6

I JUST LOVE 3" S&W's !!!
May I repeat, I LOVE A 3" K frame, especially with a round butt frame. I used to collect "contract production" S&W's, primarily law enf. pieces. I actually had a decent collection going, but along came the 1994 AWB, & I had to sell off some of my odd S&W's to purchase a few soon to be restricted items. Oh, how I cry when I think of the S&W's I let slip away ! I had a NIB US Customs M686 w/ both a 3" & 4" bbl's, both rd butt. I had a nice M10 2" rd butt, Peruvian Federal Police contract. An unusual M10, 5" bbl. w/ sq butt, mkd RNWMP. ( Royal North West Mounted Police ) Also had a 2" M49 w/ Royal Saudi crest, among a few I just can't remember. All of them were NIB. Out of all my contract S&W's, the ONLY 3" I had was the M686. The only 1 I couldn't bring myself to part with was a US Diplomatic Security Service issue 4" rd butt M19(-5). To me, it's a near perfect carry piece, if I could only convince myself to shoot it !! So guys, I you currently have a 3" K frame in your collection, you should consider yourself luckly. (P.S. Forgot to include a 3" M66 from an RSR / Ashland special run, & a 4" M64 rd butt DAO. )
Best, dpast32

One day I'll get my 'find' lettered. Back when I started my p/t gig at a different LGS than where I had been, a M&P (NOT marked M10) 3" SB, standard barrel came in. It had been traded by a young fella that desired a Glock.
Roy gave me a ship date of 1958.
And darn it, boss made me pay $200 for it.

Which Model
High all,
My father-in-law has this 3 inch .38 special. I am trying to identify which model it is, from roughly what year. It is a bit ratty, a lot better since he cleaned it up. Inside everything is OK and it shoots fine. I want to buy him a new grip and want to be sure I get the right type.

That is almost certainly a K-frame Model 10, perhaps of the 10-5 or 10-7 variety based on the standard (versus heavy) barrel profile.
Open the cylinder and look on the left side of the frame where the yoke rests, just beneath where the barrel enters the frame; the model designation should be there. Also, carefully remove the grips and check the butt of the grip; there you will find the serial number. Post it here minus the last three numbers and we can probably date it for you.
Original grips likely would be square butt Magnas, perhaps PC variety.
Post more info and we can help.

David,
To find out what year it was shipped we will need the serial# that is hidden under those very large and ugly (to me) stocks. The serial# is on the flat area on the very bottom of the "butt" or grip frame. When you open the cylinder, have a look on the frame and let us know if you see any stampings like MOD 10-7 or something similar. The correct stocks that came on the revolver from the factory look similar to those on the revolver in the post above yours.

I just looked at my collection of 3 inch K-frames. I have 11 of them in total. I have a standard profile barrel 10-4 with 3 inch barrel square butt. I was wondering about never seeing another -4 model 10 of any barrel length. Just thought I hadn't looked at enough model 10's. For once I stumbled onto a desirable gun. Of all things it was a mile from my house.

Here is another. I believe they were issued from 1967 through to 1997.
I was of the belief that all NSWPol Revolvers were destroyed when the Glocks were issued. The State Government of the day refused to sell them on. Smithnut is very lucky to have one.
The 3" barrel was chosen over the 4" barrel as the Commissioner of the day, wanted these guns to be concealed under the Officers Tunic and not be visible to the general public.

Moo Moo.
I originally purchased this from a S&WCA collector, but didn't know any details on how he added it to his collection.
When disposing of several guns a few years back, I sold this to another collector. When he lettered it he found that it never left the U.S., so apparently it was an over-run gun that eventually was sent to a US based distributor?
Regardless, it's a pretty special revolver.
FYI

My ex Victoria police issue but from a CO at CDCR IT IS MY FAVORITE to shoot. Unfortunately a klutz dropped it and broke off the hammer spur. With 158 grain RNL it is a tac driver.

Thanks for the info SmithNut. Do you remember if there was a number stamped on the left side of this Revolver? As I remember it, all of the issued Model 10's (plus the other Smiths used by NSWPol) had an Armoury number on the Frame underneath the cylinder window. Maybe this number was something put on when they arrived at the Police Armoury in Sydney.

Smithnut....I finally had to stop looking... I am not a big .38 Special fan but I shorted out the keyboad drooling....
I have never even seen most of those models...a shame that S&W couldn't still be making such quality and practicality...
