Aerojoe. All of those DPD HS shotguns didn't get destroyed. A friend of mine has one and I helped him clean it up. I did the metal, he did the wood. I refinished nothing, but took the gun apart and cleaned it in a solvent tank. Someone had put some cheezy shellac finish on the stock. Ron stripped it, without removing the battle scars, and put a low gloss tung oil on it (we're history buffs and would never touch a factory finish). Looks great and does the noble duty of standing watch over his home. It has, IIRC, a 20" barrel, bead front sight, seven shot magazine (7+1), plastic butt plate and parkerized finish.

flop-shank I have herd there are a couple that are out there but the majority of them were destroyed I herd they were junk when they finally got rid of them and went to the 870's. Tell your friend if he ever wants to sell it I would be interested. I also have a few guns I might be looking to get rid of non DPD if he is looking to trade it off.

Does anyone know if the Detroit PD was unique in issuing nickel handguns or were there other large departments that did that as well? I know that the NYPD prohibited nickel finishes at one point but I'm wondering about other departments.

The Detroit Police Department was not unique in issuing nickeled revolvers, many Midwest and Southern States with humid climates issued nickel guns as they held up better under those conditions. Florida HP comes to mind and you see some coming out of your south west departments.

Here's a presentation model 39 that was awarded to the City of Detroit Police Commisioner " Johannes Spreen" when he retired in 1970.
He then went on to become Sheriff of Oakland County Michigan. Last month I saw a newspaper clip, that showed him celebrating his 90th birthday.

Wow, I didn't know the Detroit PD once carried Merwin Hulberts! That pretty cool. Good luck restoring that one. Your work is cut out for you!

The son, now 78 years old, told me that his Dad aquired the Army Model 1917, 45 acp in the 1930's after being shot by a perp. The perp had been shot by the Lieutenant with a .38 special, but not stopped. He went to the .45 after this incident because, "when you hit somebody with a .45 they stayed hit". The old revolver was modified to the Homicide Lieutenant's specfications by another guy on the Detroit PD in the 1930's. The barrel was cut down, a front sight adjustable for elevation installed, a rear sight adjustable for windage, and the grip frame was rounded as were the service stocks. A set of Sanderson Grips were made for the revolver and were the ones prefered by the Lieutenant, the holster is a cut down U.S. 1917 issue that has most likely been with the gun since day one. I later learned that Lew Sanderson (grip maker) was on the Detroit PD in the late 1930's, the son told me the guy that made the grips did the modifications to the revolver. The son is the last in his family's line, so he passed his Dad's old friend on to me last fall. Greg

That is one of the best 1917 "Conversions" I have seen.

Back in the day, you would think the S&W factory would produce something like this.

A 45 ACP revolver is a great "Cop" gun.

Back in the day the half moon clips were the ultimate speed loaders.

I used a 6.5 and later a 6" Mod 25 for years as a duty gun.
At first with half moon clips, later with full moon clips.
While the long barrels shot great I always wanted a 4" but just could not cut one down...

I know my father couldn't agree more about liking the model 25 for duty use here is his 25-2 he carried from 1984 to around 92 when he was required to carry the glock.

Default New guns

Here are a few I just received NIB glock 23 very low number gun from original purchase in early 90's. These were issued to some lieutenant's, commanders, and inspectors they had these instead of 22's. The 27 also NIB were issued to executives and I believe the executive protection detail had them. My 27 is a non-serial number matching gun. The frame serial number does not match the slide and barrel exactly I am not sure how many or if all 27's are that way or not??? They still have not shipped out all glock 22's they still have 3rd gens to ship out of DPD.

Default M1 carbine

Here is another recent addition It is what they call a grade 1 maybe grade 1 of what Detroit had but not NRA grade 1. I did luck out there are alot of Winchester parts in it the barrel and receiver are both Winchester. The stock is a replacement as there are no arsenal stamps on it. I would bet the original was broken on somebodies head in the summer of 67 just a guess.

The actual DPD stock number is NOT the number on the bottom it is the number stamped in the side of the receiver and hand engraved in front of the rear sight on mine. The number on the bottom I am told is what precinct or precinct's it was at but I have seen high numbers in the 30's so that may not be 100% true.

Here is my beautiful Winchester Model 12 riot it is a 1950 model. I have been told there were only ever 50 of these ordered as test and evaluate guns along with 50 Ithica 37's and High Standards the HS had the cheapest price so that is what they bought however they did not hold up and then they went to the Remington 870's. The Winchesters I was told ended up being used by the Mtb or motormen who were the elite officers along with TMU. The motorman theory would explain the great condition as they took care of their equipment!!!

Just a note for anybody that gets an M1 carbine Detroit marked there were a few that were confiscated guns. They will have a C##### number where the Detroit police stock number is in front of the rear sight for Confiscated gun. There were only a few I believe they all had peep sights but not 100% sure.

One more that I need a little help with. I bought this gun a few months ago at an auction in BF egypt. They had it listed as and officers special. When I first saw it I said damn drove all this way for a model 10 but upon closer inspection it was not marked model 10. So called good old Dad. DPD has it listed as a Smith & Wesson officers police special.

I new it was an older gun as it is a 5 screw gun. It looks to be fired very little hardly a drag line on the cylinder and the bore looks beautiful. I know the gun was issued at retirement in 1966. He didn't get a checked in date or if it was issued for duty use as he wanted to get back to me so I would have an idea on bidding. (Haven't had time to get the info now.)

I added the grips as the one's that were on it looked like the target grips with the thumb shelf on the .45 conversion a few posts up. I believe these are the correct era for the gun but once again not sure.

So guys what is it I was thinking an M&P but what the hell do I know. I never herd of a S&W officers or Police Special it is chambered in .38 special. The & in the stamping on the side is a funny shape really elongated. Pictures are a little crappy. It has a good shine although in a few spots it looks like somebody used steel wool to clean it.

This has been a very interesting thread. I just found it today. I have one of the 5" nickel DPD's. Serial number 3D00129. Rack number 20835. I bought it at a gunshow in Gulfport,Ms. a few weeks ago. My old department did the same thing with the High Standard Shotguns. The bonehead in charge traded ALL of our old guns (including 97's, .351 rifles, carbines, Victory revolvers, and a couple of Thompsons) for the Low Standard shotguns. They started falling apart as soon as they were issued and were later replaced by 870's.

Detroit still has all their Thompsons and other "fun guns" I don't see them ever being sold although there are rumors every few years god knows they would make a killing selling them. Not sure I could swing 20k for a Thompson though

The worst part about the DPD 97's most of them were real GI surplus trench guns. They were traded off to century arms and god knows where they ended up. I herd they were only paid $85 a gun in the early 90's even then GI trench guns were worth 1k apiece. They also had some riot models and some confiscated 97's that DPD had cut down to riots.

Aerojoe, your gun is a post war S&W M&P or also refered to as a pre model 10. There is no such S&W revolver as a "Smith & Wesson officers police special". It sounds like who ever listed it was thinking of a Colt "Officers Model" maybe or " Offical Police" by Colt and put them all together.

That is pretty much what I figured happened but was not sure.I just thought it was weird that the auction company listed as a "police special" aswell as the DPD but I have herd people refer to the M&P as a police special. I needed a nickel M&P anyway for the collection and the $325 I paid was a pretty good price.

If there is anybody LOCAL to Detroit area that is looking for DPD guns I have a few calls to sell me guns that I probably won't want as I do not keep double guns unless they are rare. I am not sure prices usually reasonable (sometimes not) I have a rule to not pay more than $350 unless it is rare or NIB. Send me a private message and if any come across I don't want or need I will let you know. I would like to see the guns goto other DPD gun collectors and most retired Po's want them in a good home. I will not ship any guns I am not an FFL I would just be the middle man not looking for any money.

moosedog that is a nice carbine. That looks to be a replacement stock like mine???? No arsenal markings??? Looks to only have been issued to one precinct it's whole life time with Detroit. Is the 14215 the same number stamped in the side of the receiver??? That is the DPD stock number.

Yes Joe, the same number is stamped on the left side of the receiver. I had in another one, it was a Winchester that had a stock from a Universal Carbine on it, so it lacked the DPD stamps on the stock. My friend sent it back.
These guns were armored with what ever was availible for parts with no regards toward collectability.

moosedog the Universals are marked too just not all of them are. Not all the Gi guns are marked either for that matter. The way I understand it from a few guys they were stamped when they were assigned to precincts if it stayed in the arsenal it was never stamped DPD on the stock.

Detroit did weird and sometimes stupid things to their guns. Didn't know a Universal stock would even fit a Gi carbine.

The rare carbines are the ones stamped with a C number those were confiscated carbines Detroit put into inventory. There were few of them.

Zanders is not doing a very good job on this whole deal especially with the carbines. I am not sure who is grading them over there they aren't very good at it. They are also not shipping Marked carbines all the time like you got. I don't know why it is so hard to separate the DPD stamped ones from the non DPD stamped ones. They also seem to be dropping the ball on getting the Po's THEIR "duty guns" back to them they were marked to be saved for return.

Thanks for reviving this thread db! Having grown up in SE MI, I enjoy seeing all these DPD guns, and reading some of their history. Some day I'll have one of my own to share!

This one is from 1948. I installed the MOP grips but I have the originals which are serial numbered to the gun:

Perusing this thread made me wonder about all of the Detroit PD marked Glock 22's that are flooding the market right now (DPD went to the S&W M&P). Something tells me that 50-60 years from now there will NOT be a thread on Glock Talk with people showing off their beautiful and historical PD guns. Of course I could be wrong (but I don't think so).

I am going to need a little help on a colt OPMKIII it is not polished all over and has a polished hammer and trigger but the underside of the frame is still rough it is Nickel plated it was issued in 49 all the OPMKIII's I have seen don't have the polished trigger and hammer and the complete gun is polished. Not sure exactly what the deal is I know someone will tell me.

Ok just picked up my new toy sorry can't get pictures up until I get back from Dc next sat but since I can't jinx myself now it is a Winchester model 97 matching numbers factory riot Marked DPD with a copy of its DPD inventory record. It is in great shape for being used by the department and it was an academy gun for a while too.

Winchester model 97 Checked in to DPD 5-3-65 sold to Century International Arms inc 3-13-92 It has a HMB which is harbor master Bureau but it was never assigned there I have a copy of the original gun card for it.

Dads glock finally back home took awhile to get it

This is a Colt official police MkIII from an offcier it looks weird to me as the hammer and trigger are plated aswell but not the bottom side of the frame all the other OPMKIII I have seem have blued triggers and hammers and full polished jobs it was issued in 1949 he is looking for the original grips for me.

The Cabela's in Boise has a Model 12-2 Airweight marked Detroit Police for sale. It has seen some hard use but is still an interesting gun, given the Detroit connection. Its listed on the Cabela's Gun Library online.

I've got no connection to it or any real interest in it........just thought I'd mention it here.

I know this is a S&W Forum, but YOU were the guy that put the photos of the greatest little 2-inch of all times in there! The COLT DETECTIVE SPECIAL - 6 SHOT - my off duty carry piece, and still my consealed weapon carry of choice. YEAH! Let's hear it for the Colt Detective Special. What a beautiful weapon!

Nice, and a round butt, too. I assume that's the one Cabela's had (it looks like it, anyway). I wonder how many other DPD Model 12s are out there. I would imagine they're pretty scarce.

I got a great deal on it.
It was pretty dirty, lets say real dirty, but it cleaned up real nice. Functions perfect!
Grips, and everything match.

It has a good shine although in a few spots it looks like somebody used steel wool to clean it I cleaned it up with flitz but might look for a professional opinion if it can be cleaned up without damaging the finish.

AeroJoe - I am waiting to take possession of this Detroit Police Pre Model 10 Snubnose in nickel. The DPD Property Number is 10012; well used; the nickel is wearing thin but it still has class and character, and it comes with the holster that was supposedly issued with it.

Thumbs up D.P.D. Winchester 1897

Another D.P.D. comes home.
Winchester 1897, 12 gauge. Manufactured 1901.
Overall condition is fairly good considering its age. The butt stock has been cut down, and an after market butt pad installed (a very long time ago), and the brass front sight bead is missing. Everything else appears to be original.
