moosedog that is a nice carbine. That looks to be a replacement stock like mine???? No arsenal markings??? Looks to only have been issued to one precinct it's whole life time with Detroit. Is the 14215 the same number stamped in the side of the receiver??? That is the DPD stock number.

Yes Joe, the same number is stamped on the left side of the receiver. I had in another one, it was a Winchester that had a stock from a Universal Carbine on it, so it lacked the DPD stamps on the stock. My friend sent it back.
These guns were armored with what ever was availible for parts with no regards toward collectability.

moosedog the Universals are marked too just not all of them are. Not all the Gi guns are marked either for that matter. The way I understand it from a few guys they were stamped when they were assigned to precincts if it stayed in the arsenal it was never stamped DPD on the stock.

Detroit did weird and sometimes stupid things to their guns. Didn't know a Universal stock would even fit a Gi carbine.

The rare carbines are the ones stamped with a C number those were confiscated carbines Detroit put into inventory. There were few of them.

Zanders is not doing a very good job on this whole deal especially with the carbines. I am not sure who is grading them over there they aren't very good at it. They are also not shipping Marked carbines all the time like you got. I don't know why it is so hard to separate the DPD stamped ones from the non DPD stamped ones. They also seem to be dropping the ball on getting the Po's THEIR "duty guns" back to them they were marked to be saved for return.

Thanks for reviving this thread db! Having grown up in SE MI, I enjoy seeing all these DPD guns, and reading some of their history. Some day I'll have one of my own to share!

This one is from 1948. I installed the MOP grips but I have the originals which are serial numbered to the gun:

Perusing this thread made me wonder about all of the Detroit PD marked Glock 22's that are flooding the market right now (DPD went to the S&W M&P). Something tells me that 50-60 years from now there will NOT be a thread on Glock Talk with people showing off their beautiful and historical PD guns. Of course I could be wrong (but I don't think so).

I am picking up a few new toys next week one pretty rare pictures to follow.

I am going to need a little help on a colt OPMKIII it is not polished all over and has a polished hammer and trigger but the underside of the frame is still rough it is Nickel plated it was issued in 49 all the OPMKIII's I have seen don't have the polished trigger and hammer and the complete gun is polished. Not sure exactly what the deal is I know someone will tell me.

Ok just picked up my new toy sorry can't get pictures up until I get back from Dc next sat but since I can't jinx myself now it is a Winchester model 97 matching numbers factory riot Marked DPD with a copy of its DPD inventory record. It is in great shape for being used by the department and it was an academy gun for a while too.

The Cabela's in Boise has a Model 12-2 Airweight marked Detroit Police for sale. It has seen some hard use but is still an interesting gun, given the Detroit connection. Its listed on the Cabela's Gun Library online.

I've got no connection to it or any real interest in it........just thought I'd mention it here.

I know this is a S&W Forum, but YOU were the guy that put the photos of the greatest little 2-inch of all times in there! The COLT DETECTIVE SPECIAL - 6 SHOT - my off duty carry piece, and still my consealed weapon carry of choice. YEAH! Let's hear it for the Colt Detective Special. What a beautiful weapon!

Nice, and a round butt, too. I assume that's the one Cabela's had (it looks like it, anyway). I wonder how many other DPD Model 12s are out there. I would imagine they're pretty scarce.

I got a great deal on it.
It was pretty dirty, lets say real dirty, but it cleaned up real nice. Functions perfect!
Grips, and everything match.

DPD has it listed as a Smith & Wesson officers police special.

I new it was an older gun as it is a 5 screw gun. It looks to be fired very little hardly a drag line on the cylinder and the bore looks beautiful. I know the gun was issued at retirement in 1966. He didn't get a checked in date or if it was issued for duty use as he wanted to get back to me so I would have an idea on bidding. (Haven't had time to get the info now.)

I added the grips as the one's that were on it looked like the target grips with the thumb shelf on the .45 conversion a few posts up. I believe these are the correct era for the gun but once again not sure.

So guys what is it I was thinking an M&P but what the hell do I know. I never herd of a S&W officers or Police Special it is chambered in .38 special. The & in the stamping on the side is a funny shape really elongated. Pictures are a little ******. It has a good shine although in a few spots it looks like somebody used steel wool to clean it I cleaned it up with flitz but might look for a professional opinion if it can be cleaned up without damaging the finish.

AeroJoe - I am waiting to take possession of this Detroit Police Pre Model 10 Snubnose in nickel. The DPD Property Number is 10012; well used; the nickel is wearing thin but it still has class and character, and it comes with the holster that was supposedly issued with it.

Nah, keep the buttstock how it is. That's an old street-sweeper with character, good find. I bet that shotgun could tell some stories.

Colt did not announce the Mark III version of their J frame* revolvers until late 1968. What you have is just a standard Colt Official Police revolver which was in production from 1927 until around 1969.
There are many internal and external differences between the two models. The Official Police was the child of the Colt Army Special which was the original swing-out cylinder revolver in mass production and predated the S&W swing-out cylinder Military & Police by about 7 years. (1892 vs 1899) Originally built on what was first termed as their "41 frame" (they were first produced in .38 Long Colt and .41 Long Colt calibers) it later became the Colt J Frame.

Standard Colt finishes also changed around the same time. Gone was the old labor intensive (expensive) hand polishing. Less brilliant finishes becoming more tacticool for that era.

Very nice.
If you take the grips off, there should be an inventory number on the bottom of the grip frame.

Actually, it's on the right side of the frame, just below the cylinder.

My father is a DPD sgt. I have ads in the union papers so alot come from there. That and a lot of the guns come from guys that worked with my father after 36 yrs on the job you make lots of friends. I have turned down a lot of guns but a lot are the standard model 10's. Some of the guys think just because it says Detroit the gun is worth thousands. Sometimes they are but hardly ever!!!

The uniformed Detroit officer in this September, 1957 retouched press photo appears to be carrying a Colt revolver.

These are not the greatest pictures i need a good sunny day to get some good ones the gun is to dark and shiny to use the flash. Here you can see the only real wear marks on the gun at the top of the rear sight. I almost feel bad for what I paid for this gun but he was happy to see it stay in the DPD family as are alot of the guys my guns come from.

The gun was issued to the President of the Sgt's union when he retired in 1997. He said he only shot 6 rounds from it and put it in a drawer. It is kind of weird that he got it in 1997 because Detroit sold all their smiths and colts in 1991 to Century arms when they changed over to the glocks well I guess not all of them?? He traded his nickle plated colt for this airweight decent trade??

Does anybody know what the finish is on the 12-2 I know the barrel and cylinder are blued but what is the finish on the aluminum frame??? Is it just S&W's version of gunkote???

It should be a bright anodized finish, I would assume.

This thread reminds me of one of my buddies I had in the Army, he said he might work for the "DEE-troit PO-lice" when he got out

I have my eye on a Detroit Police marked 64-5 that's been floating around gun shows in my area but overpriced at $450.....basically he's hoping for $300 for the holster beat gun and $150 for the "cool Detroit stamp" on the backstrap.....he never sold it because most people in central PA could care less about a Detroit marked gun.

Never pay big $$$ for a beat down 64-5 because there were around 1000 of them and they pop up nib all the time for around $500. DPD never issued the 64-5's because they changed over to the glock before they ran out of model 10's.

How did this 64-5 come about being marked for the Detroit Police?

Was it an "over run" that was never issued?

There's no way it's a "fake", not worth the effort to fake a mark that adds nothing of value to most people.

They are not fake markings they were just never issued to officers. DPD had them in the inventory but they changed over to the glock before any of the 64-5's were issued they did issue alot of 64-2's mostly to retiring officers. All the 64-5's were sold nib to century arms when DPD changed over to the glock in 1992.

So it must be that someone bought this on the cheap from Century, used it as a carry piece and now is trying to double their money on it......

century arms is a distributor they sold them to gun dealers across America. But yeah I herd those guns went cheap back then I herd they could be bought for only a few hundred dollars even the nib guns. But a gun is only worth what somebody is willing to pay for it

I recently purchase a 64-4 2inch RB, Detroit Police Mark with the Original Box. Under Features, the box is marked "SPECIAL" Product code is 102501, Spec. Ord # 1728. The seller claimed that it had never been issued, as you mention for the 64-5"s. Do you think this 64-4 could just be one that was in inventory or ? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The only model 64's that were never issued were the 64-5's. There were alot of officers that traded their 5" service guns for snubnose or shorter barreled guns when they retired.

I know up until a few years ago DPD still have model 64-2's they would give at retirement. I also know they still have some used model 10's in inventory.

A lot of the officers that took New guns when they retired never took them out of the box. They owned other OD guns they liked to carry already.

The model 12-2 I posted belonged to the president of the Sgt & Lt's association and he never fired it but 6 bullets when he got it then put it in a drawer for 15yrs until i bought it.

Default 64-2 2 inch

With any luck I will pick up a 64-2 2 inch DPD marked gun tomorrow. There is no box but from the photos it looks 98/99%. I was reading the for sale guns on this forum and it was mentioned that he had a 64 2 inch. I was surprised to find out it was still for sale and marked DPD.
