I have often wondered about the 5" barrels. 1" closer to the target? I do own a couple of Classic PC N frames, .44, 45, & .44 Magnum, and a 27-2 nickle, all in 6 or 6.5". I can see the 6 inches for the sight radius, but 5"?
BTW I own one of the swivel flap holsters for the 2" revolvers, holster was made for DPD, I find that a 3" K frame w/fixed sights fits this holster perfectly, M10s, 64, 65 etc..
Personally I find myself thinking that the short but bulky swivel flap holsters for the 2" look silly-at least they must have worn in uniform. Then I found that I can wear it while hunting and it drops just below my jacket hemline with the belt and extra ammo under the coat, and it drops low enough so it does not interfere with my rifle/shotgun, they must have that in mind???????

LTs and above were authorized the 2 inch guns for uniform carry and the short flap holster was designed to ride below the issue IKE jacket of the time. Regarding the 5 inch guns, I recall the near magical shooting that some of the firearms instructors could accomplish with the weapon while instructing in the indoor ranges located in the basements of the precinct stations. Sadly, I have heard that inadequate ventilation resulted in several of those men becoming ill from lead poisoning

The holster flap is kept closed by a latch that turns to slip through a metal slot in the flap. Not exactly combat ready. Most coppers who owned their own guns bought the Jordan style hammer strap holster and had someone sew a minimal sized flap ( some times no larger than a shoe tongue) onto the holster and used a snap to close the new flap. Many theories exist why the flaps were required, from trying to project a kinder gentler image after the 67 riots, to preventing gun grabs. What ever why, the holsters were very unpopular.

Here's my 10-7 snubby. The nickel is hazy in spots, may do a refinish in the distant future. I carry this one on a regular basis.

Used Blue Magic last year. Looked good. But the haze came back a few months later. Not worried about it since I carry it. Might send it to S&W when my gun toting days are over.

I NEVER SAW MORE GORGEOUS GUNS ISSUED TO A POLICE DEPARTMENT. THE NICKEL SNUBBIES ARE FANTASTIC. I WOULD ASSUME THAT THE MOTIVE TO ORDER NICKEL WOULD BE THE EXPECTATION THAT IT WOULD BE MORE RESISTANT TO THE ELEMENTS AND TO HOLSTER WEAR. (HAVING NEVER OWNED A NICKEL GUN, I HAVE NO CLUE IF THIS IS TRUE) I CAN'T IMAGINE THAT THEY WOULD PURCHASE THEM FOR MERELY COSMETIC PURPOSES. IN ANY EVENT, I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE ONE OF THOSE SNUBBY S&Ws………...

That was some of the reason for the nickel guns the other is Prestige at one time Detroit Police Department was one of the Premier Police Departments in America. They were the first with Harley Davidson motorcycles, first with in car radios there arme many other first's. They also made a lot of scientific first's. It was just a tradition they held on to for over 100years until the change to Glocks.

A friend (retired DPD officer) is in the process of starting the Detroit Police Historical Foundation. It has been slowed down because of the government sequestration but is back on track now and being helped by the new chief of police in Detroit. He hopes to have an announcement in a few months of a Detroit Police museum. I am hoping I can convince him we need a limited edition Detroit Police Historical foundation S&W M&P40 with a nickel plated slide. That and 2015 is 150th anniversary of the Detroit Police Department.

I went to high school in Roseville, MI and then college (for two years) in Detroit, finishing up at Oakland U. in Rochester. My first job after getting my degree was teaching 7th and 8th grade at a school on Oakman Blvd. just around the corner from 12th Street. It was 1968/69, after the riots when Martin Luther King was killed. I have the greatest of memories of my time in Detroit city and the metropolitan area. I first learned to shoot trap off Metropolitan Parkway in Macomb County and first hunted for rabbit and pheasant in southern Michigan southwest of Detroit. I feel very very badly about what has happened to Detroit. I hope it comes back big-time.

I, too, would like to pick up a D.P.D nickel piece, preferably a chief's special. You guys that have a Detroit gun: any tips on where to look for one? I live on the west coast and I'm thinking there might be some Michigan-based websites that are more likely to have a listing of one for sale. I have yet to see one listed for sale on this site.

libertasdon, try the MGO (Michigan Gun Owners) forum. DPD guns also do occassionally show up for sale here at the S&W forum, too. I found mine here.

This is not my gun it is now part of the Detroit Police museum which will open May 12th 2015. The gun belonged to George Kimball the first Detroit police officer shot and killed in the line of duty in 1883.

The first of many DPD officers to die in the line of duty, including several of my friends. Aerojoe, if you contributed that weapon to the new museum, thank you.

No I did not donate the firearm it has always been part of DPD since the officer died. I do have one of the largest collections of DPD firearms and my father is a 41 year and counting veteran of the DPD.

I am part of the Detroit Police Historical Society which is going through the process of becoming a non profit and run by Jeff Lemaux who is the "unofficial official" historian of the Department. He is also running the museum for the Detroit Public Safety Foundation. We have been cleaning up and sorting artifacts for the last few weeks.

There will be some cool artifacts coming in from different units. There are scooters from the scooter squad of the 1960's. We have a 1930's Harley Davidson on display. There are items from one of the first Women's Divisions within a police department. The bomb squad is bringing in some of the early bomb suits and robots any police depts used. We have a 1950's "Iron Mike" tactical body shields. There will be quarterly changes in theme of the displays.

Obviously one of the coolest areas to me is that the Detroit Police has extensive arsenal of rare weapons. The list includes Thompson machine guns and a range of Uzi sub machine guns in different sizes and calibers. H&K brief case MP5's.Mayor Coleman Young was a gun nut and I have herd a lot of cool stuff got bought for him to "play" with. He was also paranoid so his Executive Protection Detail EPU always had the best weapons. They even have two Cadillac limos fully armor plated he used when he was mayor. These items are still in inventory even the limo's.

The museum is starting out small hopefully it will grow quick but that will come with donations of money and as items taken by people for safe keeping are returned to the Historical Society.

Also so DPD gun collectors know keep your eyes open DPD will be flooding the market with around 2500+ M&P 40's and some compact 40's as Smith & Wesson is trading out the guns to new 2nd generation guns. This will be happening on officers next qualifications this summer. I am not sure what distributor is getting the old guns but rumor is the new guns are arriving now.

Also Forgot to mention this museum is in the New Detroit Public Safety headquarters it is a secure facility I am not sure if officers other than DPD personnel or LEO's on official business are allowed to bring firearm's into the building. There is security x-ray and metal detectors at the entrance. Just a warning for anybody local.

So I took this 64 out and burnt some powder. 15 Yards, 12 rounds, single action, point of aim was the 12 O'Clock, or top of the circle.

Chronographed 4 loads, current production WIN 130 Grain FMJ FP, 791 FPS; 1966 Olin Corp 130 grain FMJ Vietnam era round nose, 748 FPS; WIN 125 grain +P 975 FPS; and Priv-Partisan 158 LRN, 792 FPS.

I forgot what a joy shooting a .38 Special was.

Detroit PD had a rule or regulation that stated all ammunition had to be lead non-hollowpoint. The issue bullet for years was the 158 grain lead round nose.

Many savvy Cops carried S&W 4" or 6" N Frames in .41, .44 and .45 Colt with lead semi-wadcutters. The Model 25 was very popular. I knew 2 Officers who, in addition to the Model 10 on their hip, carried semi auto's in a shoulder rig under their shirt or jacket. One carried a BHP, the other a Remington Rand 1911, stoked up with FMJ. I'd asked both of them about the department regs and they just smiled and shrugged. The fellow who carried the BHP also told me him and his partner would always take an M1 Carbine and Pump Shotgun out for their shift.

Default Another DPD marked .38 Revolver............

Very interesting thread. I wasn't sure what I had until I checked it out. The revolver I have is not a S&W, but is a parkerized Colt Commando (Sorry, but I collect Colt's) which has, "8195" stamped over top of "DPD" on the bottom of the butt.

Now that I know the Detroit P.D. once owned the gun and that one of Detroit's finest carried it, the pistol has achieved sentimental status. My father was born in Detroit in 1907 and lived there for a number of years.

Thank you for a great thread.

Bill,

not to cause disappointment, but did you notice posts #274 and 282 in this thread? Your gun DPD 8195 seems to be a brother to that post's DPD 8189 (if the style of mark matches), and in that case DPD may not stand for Detroit. They were pretty consistent in their backstrap marking; I've recently seen a 1940 Official Police and a 1946 M&P with the identical script "Detroit Police", not the DPD abbreviation, so it seems to have remained the same through the war. If you can ever spare the money, it might be interesting to see if yours letters to the U.S.M.C. also.

There was a time when Detroit guns were marked DPD with a stock number but it was before around 1910 my Merwin and hulbert and S&W hammerless safety are marked that way. Back then it was not the Detroit Police Department but Metropolitan Police of Detroit. Detroit never used the Colt Commando.

Thank you both. My Commando is marked exactly like the one in Post #274. So what does the "DPD" stamped on these two revolvers stand for?........Who knows! My revolver has most of its original finish, but shows evidence of having been shot frequently.

I know its an old post, but new to me. I was born and raised in Detroit. My fathers best friend was Jim Annis, he parked his squad car in our driveway on Washburn (Fenkel & Wyoming) during the riots, and stayed in our house with his partner and two Michigan National Guardsman. my mom furnished sandwiches and coffee to many an officer(s) who stopped during those difficult days. I believe Jim was out of the 6th Precinct, anyway whenever he visited, his stag grip nickel snub nose .38 he would put in an upper kitchen cabinet away from us kids. I would sneak a peak of it holstered in a separate belt as often as I could. Jims gone now, and I hope his son has it.

I have a few G-22 2nd gen Glocks DPD marked, but my prize collection is a "Trifecta" of unissued G-22/23/27 in the box.

I would love to find a used, worn, G-27, for EDC, to replace mine.

My brother is a LT, with Hazel Park PD and has seen them around, but down here in INDY, all I can do is check Armslist and Gunbroker daily for one.

Really enjoyed this post thanks!

Not a handgun, but...
A few years ago, Robinson Trading Post had Beretta 1201FP 12ga semiauto riot guns said to be Detroit PD surplus. Since I like Beretta, and I like semiauto shotguns, I jumped.
They had pics of each one, and there were a lot to choose from. Many showed plenty of wear, but the one I picked out looked just about new.
It had a too-long straight sporting Buttstock with a hard rubber pad, which I replaced with a Choate PG stock with a Limbsaver Airtech pad and 12" LOP.
If you read up on this shotgun, most writers talk about the "brutal recoil".
With this stock and pad, no problem.
Anyway, I was disappointed to not find any DPD property marks.
