I bought this one last month. A transitional model made in 1947 and shipped to DPD. The grips are replacements as the originals are pretty worn.

Great find! And the nickel is in very nice shape compared to some Detroit guns from that time frame I've seen. But by all means keep those original stocks, if they number to the gun, no matter how worn! Could be make a three-digit difference in terms of what a police collector might be willing to pay, just in case you ever want to sell the gun again.

What are the odds that the DPD marked Colt Commandos were used by the Dallas PD?

My Day-twah-lay PD 1926 Colt Army Special .38.
Unfortunately, some French shower sack ground off the Detroit Police stamping.
Fortunately, the inventory number is still stamped on the bottom of the butt, and it is the exact same font as the others I've seen from the same era.
[IMG][/IMG]
Did I mention someone had it chopped and bobbed?
They chopped it to about 3" Bbl length.
They also recrowned the barrel nicely.
[IMG][/IMG]
They also did a pretty decent job making the replacement front sight.
It's a little taler than I like, and I'd like it better if the top had rounded corners.
But, the face of it is pretty nicely grooved.
[IMG][/IMG]

The MOP stocks do make it look like a pimp gun, but they are nice stocks.
The bobbed hammer is also checkered on it's top.

Somebody made a damned nice carry piece from it.
I'd love to restore it to it's original 5" barreled, spurred hammer, non-pimp stocked, glory.
However, it IS a pretty nice carry piece.

It was cheap, because collectors apparently don't want a molested Colt.
I was all over it, because of the nice MOP stocks, the cheap price, and the fact that I like Colts.

I really want an AS of OP in .32-20 (IF the OP was made in that chambering).
I also want an M&P in .32-20.

This thread has a lot of subscribers so I'll post this here. Bud's has used Detroit PD-marked S&W M&P40s w/ 3 mags listed in stock for $319. This may be old news but someone just shared it on a local forum and I figured I'd pass it along for those here who may be interested.

Has it ever been determined that the DPD stamping has anything to do with Detroit? This has been the subject of discussion several times, but it appears that Detroit always stuck to spelling out "Detroit" on their guns, not just the famous revolver back strap, but also more modern plastic guns.

Aha. That's the real deal then.

Then we're still trying to figure out who issued the "DPD" marked guns that keep popping up, going back to WW II (see post #274).

In the 1970-1980 era I state certified guards for a security company. Most of these guards were retired LEOs from other states. Most certified with their old service revolvers. I recall the ones from DPD had Colt Official Police Models with five inch barrels and were nickeled plated

Well, here's another one I couldn't pass up. Even though it's been cut down to 3 inch barrel length it shoots decent from the 12 yard line out back.

This is an awesome thread. My grandfather was gunsmith and chief armorer for DPD through the 50's and 60's. He passed away when I was 2yo in 1969.

I can only imagine how many of these SW revolver's passed through his hands. I am sure much of the DPD engraving was his work.

I was DPD sworn from 73-75, when I moved on to Miami-Dade. From 72-73, I was a civilian on the Police Commissioner’s staff at Headquarters. One day, an officer I worked with took me down to the armory in the basement. It was probably after your grandfather’s time, but what a cool place. Unamaginable that one could get paid for spending each day working on Smith and Colt revolvers. How cool would that be?

A few years ago, I spied a DPD marked 2” 64 at a South Florida gun show. Having once been DPD, I couldn’t buy it quick enough. Came complete with box, tools, and papers. Like your’s, it looked NIB. Called DPD armory and was advised that mine was unissued and sold off when DPD went to Glocks. Probably the same as your’s. Shoots like a dream. It’s my low profile piece. Once saw a DPD Det. Sgt., I worked with, face down a gunman in an alley, challenging him to “Go ahead, pull” like in a movie. He was packing a 2” Model 10. But that is a story for another time.

I know it's like almost 10 years later, but in case you haven't found one, this is a link for a pre model 10, nickel RB Detroit marked snub. It's pretty expensive, but just in case you were interested here it is.

LLOYD17, looks like you have most of them. You need 2 Smiths that I’m aware of; SS M64 and a nickel 5”. I have the SS 2” and missed on the 4” from Gander Mountain, when they went out of business. I was issued the NPR 5”, but put it away for a 4” nickel M19, when on the job. Still have the 19. Saved my life once, so it’s a keeper.

I’ve shot my father-in-law’s nickel Colt DPD gun that his dad carried in the 50’s. I’ll keep an eye out for the other Smith’s since it seems I’m now collecting DPD guns.

LLOYD17, thanks for reminding me about the Colts. Revolver issue day in the DPD Academy, staff came around and put a box in front of each recruit. Colt or SW, no system. What you got is what you got. SW M&P or Colt Official Police. All nickel, fixed sight, 5”, .38.

I love that 1897 Shotgun!

As for something DPD related, this one is weird.

I posted this revolver in another thread. Murray Chodak was the law firm partner of James Hoffa Jr.

Each DPD Scout Car had a gun box in the trunk that included a 12 ga shotgun and one of those M1 carbines. Sunday morning, at the precincts, was carbine clean and inspect time. Never saw one of those ‘97 shotguns on the street, but fired them in the Academy. Hold the trigger down and it would fire as fast as it was pumped. Awesome firepower, but not the safest of weapons.

This .38 M&P Airweight was shipped to the Detroit Police March 24, 1953 on an Advertising Account. It resulted in a large order on .38 M&P Airweights.
I bought this from a retired Smith & Wesson employee.

It’s unbelievable that at one time that airweight was enough.

Does that gun still have its aluminum cylinder? I just picked on up today. How do you know it was an advertising account and what is a large order?

It was not uncommon for old DPD guns to make it all over the world there are a lot of model 10's went to Sweden and Germany. Century arms was the buying dealer in the early 90's and they deal all over the world.

Yes, it still has the aluminum cylinder. It was a single gun shipment on an Advertising Account. I'm the Assistant Historian for the Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation.

Will not bore you guys and gals, but there are LOTS of war stories that accompany the DPD guns that turn up here. Thanks for the memories.

Does anyone know if there is a public source available for DPD inventory numbers? If so, I suspect it would provide a wealth of interesting data. Thanks...

There is but there is not. I have the DPD paperwork on all my DPD marked guns. I was invited to display my firearms at the 150th anniversary gala in 2015 and given the information for my DPD marked guns. My father was also a DPD Sgt at the time he retied after 45 years in Mar2020. These are screenshots from the Detroit Newspaper. It was really an honor to be part of the event.

I am good friends with and help the curator / head DPD historian and he is trying to negotiate the older firearms records to be placed at the Detroit Police museum inside of the Hq.

Detroit has records pretty much back to the first gun issued. The very old guns will only have their record of sale. Red circle is my 1897MFG safety hammerless

But the later firearms have officers names such as these I have blacked out.

Here lies the problem he will not give out officers full names weather they are retired or still active for security reasons. Other then the officers info there really is no info except when it was issued and when the gun was sold. The gun could have been sitting around from one day to 10 years unissued.

The old shotgun book cannot be found but this came with a 1897 I bought from the private collection of the curator.

Just picked this DPD Colt Cobra up DPD#17442 It is a little rough I have found that Fords custom guns will refinish this gun and I may do some selective refinishing of the cylinder and yoke and possibly the barrel. I will not refinish the whole gun as it is takes away all of it's history. I am looking for a set of factory cobra grips in rough shape to put on this gun if anybody has any they want to part with for a reasonable price. These hip grips are what a lot of DPD cops used or just a few rubber bands around the grip.

Not a DPD firearm but just as cool Ths is 1 of 2 known to exist Detroit Police Callbox posts with the light on top. My setup is missing the DPD marked flasher relay that would have been mounted on the post to control the light on top. The Call box is the very rare less then 15-20 known to exist 1895 marked Gamewell call box. This box predates the name change to Detroit Police and also the change from city wide call boxes to precinct style call box system.

Sorry for the messy picture (home renovations). It's final resting place all 10ft tall 500#'s of it is my parents retirement house my father use's it as a night light.

A friend george patak posing with the box

Smith and Wesson Model 12 airweight DPD# 19794 with it's original box, warranty card, manual, service center location card, and a S&W ammunition booklet.

I forgot I never posted pictures of this gun since I used to use photobucket.

Lovin your stuff, Joe. Made many a “pull” at those boxes walking a beat on E. Jefferson. The Hip Grip was very popular. Still have mine. Barami, the mfg, was located on 7 Mile Road at one time. Originally they came with only the hook side. Later editions included both grip sides. The FBI rubber band grip resulted in lots of dropped pieces during dancing at cop weddings.

I had been looking for an M&P airweight for 10+ years and last year I found 2 the other was rather expensive this was an amazing deal with a awesome story. This gun belonged to a 98 year old retired Womens division officer. See way back in 1947 women didn't work the streets of Detroit they were assigned to the Womens Division where they worked on women problems and child abuse issues etc. They did not even get the same badge as a male Detroit police officer. But they did get a M&P airweight and a gun purse. I asked her if all the women had these blued steel guns and she said yes none that she new were issued the nickel plated 2" or 5" barreled guns. This has to be my number one favorite gun in my collection behind my Coleman Young 00001DPD glock22.

Bottom center is my fathers OD model 36. He had to have another officer buy for him when he graduated from the academy as he was to young (19) to buy himself. I had it rebuild hammer bobbed and replated for him a few years ago I also had is Po badge engraved on the side plate. He still uses the Rubber band grips to 45 years after he got the gun. The only holsters he has ever owned for any gun were his Dept issued holsters!! and yes that gun as bounced across a few dance floors and maybe a Walmart parking lot some where in South Dakota. If that gun could talk it was used to catch a bank robber in the 80's and caught a few neighbored hoodlums in the 90's and a backed up a Harper Woods Pd officer in the 2000's all with rubberbands on the grip. He even had rubber bands on his personal owned duty carried 25-2.

If you look at the post above in the picture is my fathers model 36 with rubber bands wrapped around the grip. I have never really herd it called the FBI grip until this forum but all the old time Detroit Police officers did this my father still uses rubberbands to this day and does not own a single holster for a gun other then his Dept issued duty belt ones. It was to keep the gun from sliding down your pant leg for the most part it worked unless you started dancing or running lol. For a long time when i was a kid 80-90's he did have a metal barrel clip for this gun that he used but it broke and he could never find another one or who made the original one.

Hmm not sure how many more pics you want? I posted it twice (yes part of it is cut off) and explained what it is not sure what more you are looking for. The only other thing I can tell you is take one of your revolvers put 1 or 2 1/8 wide rubber bands around the upper part of the grip and there you go.
