I will start it off with this nice cherry model 10-5 in nickel from the Detroit PD with a 5" barrel.
I am curious how many will surface here and if they are different in barrel length from mine.
Peter.

Going back to at least the 1940s, DPD issued 5 inch nickel Colt Official Police or 5 inch nickel S&W M&P which later became the model 10 in 1957. The 10-5s were the last S&W duty guns bought.
The bureaus, and command got issued 2 inch nickel Colt DS or S&W M&P. Some blued 2 inch M&P were bought, but most are nickel. Later model 64s in 2 inch were bought. Those are the only two barrel lengths issued.
Officers were allowed to purchase and carry their own Colt or S&W DA revolvers in 38Spl or larger and supplied their own holsters, ammo and pouches or speed loaders. The S&W model 39 and 59 were also allowed starting in the 1970s.
Here's a post war M&P. I'll try to dig up some more photos.
Here's it's blued post war brother.

Damn! This opens an old wound for me. I had one about 10 yrs ago. I paid $199. A beautiful DPD marked 5". Pristine.

Back then I didn't apreciate what it was as it was my only S&W back then. It was just a "clunky .38". I stupidly traded it off for something that I don't even remember. One of my biggest gun regrets. Ouch.

These are really neat and everything, but y'all will have to pardon my ignorance. What's the difference in Detroit marked P.D. guns, and other marked P.D. issue weapons? I'd love to have ANY of these, but I don't see the added interest.

Just out of curiosity, what is the current price on these. Know someone that has 2 of them and may let me have one. They are the 5" guns. Larry

For that price I would have bought it also. I saw the guns abt 2 yrs ago and he was around 300.00. The cond was around 95 or better. Just didn't hit at that time and I know he still has them. I'll have to give him a call. Maybe he'll let me have the better of the two. Larry

WhiteCoyote-Nice collection. Most of the Detroit police revolvers don't do anything for me, but the two snubbies you have are fantastic. Nice to see more locals have great taste in handguns.

My computer, my opinion.

It is a way of "collecting" something, I live in Philly, and if the Philly PD had such a rich heritage of Smith and Colt revolvers, I would have them too!
You collect smiths?
Why not iver johnsons??

No pics but a friend of mine worked for DPD starting in 1971. He bought his own duty gun - a nickel 6" Python that he carried until they authorized semi-autos. As a detective he carried a Chief's Special.

Great thread, it gives me a chance to again share this story. The old "unmarked" Model 1917 pictured below was obtained from the son of a Detroit PD, Homicide Lieutenant from the late 1920's thru the early 1950's. The son, now 78 years old, told me that his Dad aquired the Army Model 1917, 45 acp in the 1930's after being shot by a perp. The perp had been shot by the Lieutenant with a .38 special, but not stopped. He went to the .45 after this incident because, "when you hit somebody with a .45 they stayed hit". The old revolver was modified to the Homicide Lieutenant's specfications by another guy on the Detroit PD in the 1930's. The barrel was cut down, a front sight adjustable for elevation installed, a rear sight adjustable for windage, and the grip frame was rounded as were the service stocks. A set of Sanderson Grips were made for the revolver and were the ones prefered by the Lieutenant, the holster is a cut down U.S. 1917 issue that has most likely been with the gun since day one. I later learned that Lew Sanderson (grip maker) was on the Detroit PD in the late 1930's, the son told me the guy that made the grips did the modifications to the revolver. The son is the last in his family's line, so he passed his Dad's old friend on to me last fall. Greg

To answer "Robbt"s question, this is a picture of DPD Patrol issue 10-5 5 inch inventory # 20752 serial # D921510 sitting on it's box which measures 4 3/8th X 11 1/2 inches, grey with blue metal corners.

Here's a picture of one of my partner's father's guns. A model 12-2 which he carried as a backup. I had the honor of repairing and cleaning it recently.
In 1976, my friends father was walking into the Fisher Building in downtown Detroit when a gun man who just robbed the bank inside ran out. PO Dorhing was in uniform and on his way to pick up his wife who worked in that building. The gunman opened fire on my friend's father hitting PO Dorhing three times in the torso. All none fatal wounds. PO Dorhing returned fire as the suspect ran away shooting him thru the shoulder. The suspect lived on the streets and in dope houses for almost a year until the "back alley" surgery he had became so infected that he turned himself in.
PO Dorhing returned to work and retired after 25 years. He passed away several years ago. This is his 12-2.

Finally, here's a gun with a Detroit story to it.
This is a CZ 27 with Nazi markings on it. Most likely brought back from the war by a Detroit Vet. It comes back "clear no record" which means that the vet never got it registered. It was recently found inside the wall of a Detroit residence under going reconstruction.
The only thing that I can think of is that it was most likey stolen from the Vet's home on a B&E, used in a crime and then stashed in the wall but never retreived. Interesting.

I've got one just like that WhiteCoyote and I were shooting last week.
I'll look up my inventory number on it, maybe their brothers.

Mine is identical to yours in condition and is serial numbered 3D163XX with inventory number 21441.
At maximum strength the Detroit Police Department had around 5,000 members in the late 60s and into the early 70s.
Those two inch model 10s and Colt Detective Specials were issued to the Command Officers and plain clothes Detectives. They came in nickel and sometime blue. Uniform got 5 inch S&W model 10s or Colt Official Police in nickel finish.

Having grown up in Metro Detroit, I've always wanted one of these but never came across one. If any one would like to sell one, I'd like to buy one of if you come across one, please e-mail me or contact me. I would like one that is not in new condition but one that was used, as it would represent one carried. I am impressed with the pictures and stories.

I visited my father, who lived 30 minutes west of Detroit, back in the early to mid '80s. I remember seeing Detroit cops packing six-inch revolvers in swivel holsters. Years later, I befriended a retired Detroit cop who owned one of the nickel 5-inch M10s. He said it was issued to rookies, and once off probation most officers selected another revolver.

Both of my folks has the model 15 that they got when they were working on the force. What does the numbers at the end of Detroit Police mean?

I guess you have to use an image hosting sight to post pictures? I just picked up a really rough but original Merwin Hulbert folding hammer .38 stamped DPD 143 checked in to Detroit in the 1880's sold to fletchers hardware for $4 in the early 1900s. What is a good (free) image hosting site?

Default Model 10 5"

I worked in Detroit from 84 - 90. Visited 1310 Beaubien many times to see detectives and do record checks. The department has a rich history. They had some great pics of the entire detective bureau hanging on the walls upstairs from the old days. I also bought one of the Model 10 5" pistols, NIB, nickel, several years ago. I am a fan of the Model 10 and had to have this one. I wonder if DPD HQ is still at 1310???????

Detroit marked P.D. guns went to the Detroit police department-other PD marked guns went to other police departments.

There really is no difference between PD marked guns not even a difference between PD and non PD guns. I ONLY collect Detroit Marked guns with my father DPD Sgt. We started looking for his original DPD colt OPMKIII a few years ago and then said these are neat too and went from there.

Detroit used so many different models I do not think anybody will ever get them all. I was told some were destroyed by the Dept in the 80's . I believe all the Win 30-30's and HS shotguns were destroyed. Handgun wise there is well over 30 different gun models used and then test and evaluate guns like the 1903 colt's only 50-75 ever bought. Then there were pistol team guns. Remember DPD started in 1865 so lots of guns.

Then there were the long guns. They had Winchester 97's aka trench guns. They had High standard's shotguns now beat up 870's. They also had surplus m1 carbines and Universal brand carbines. Winchester 30-30 lever actions. Then there were some guns that will never see private hands like all the Thompson machine guns marked DPD they still have from prohabition days.

I personally collect other DPD items besides guns. I have every call box style they used since 1895. I have a few older light bars and gumball machines. About the only DPD item I don't collect is badges and patches those are boring.

Hi:
Re:The letters and numbers "DPD 12345" on the revolvers' back strap- how were they added? Hand stamped or by machine?
Thanks,

Here's a DPD issue model 10-5, inventory number 12958, serial number C8591XX which was shipped in March of 1967.
Four months prior to the Detroit Riots.
I will shamelessly add that it is currently listed under the for sale section.
