I found a Model of 1955 in 97% condition at the gun show today. No box or anything just a nice gun. It is a 4 screw. Correct grips. 45 Colt. Barrel is i think 6 1/2". What is it worth? They are asking $700
Thanks, John

If it's really a non-model and the barrel is marked ".45 CAL MODEL 1955" and it's actually in .45 Colt and not .45 ACP then it's worth about 5 times what one in .45 ACP is worth, which translates to about $3000-4000 or more.
Nahas and Supica's Standard Catalog of S&W say that about 15 of these were made in .45 Colt and only one has surfaced.
Can you get pics, or a serial number, or go back and VERIFY that's it's not model marked and in .45 Colt?
That would be a definite BUY if it all checks out. Seriously, it would be a rare gun.

It COULD also be a gunsmith special. In the 70's, gunsmiths all over the country were building 45 Colts on Mod 28's, Mod 25's, etc. If so, I would not pay 700 for it.

Both of the above posts are giving you good advice. I would add that I have a source here, that says that approximately 200 1955 .45 Colts were turned out from the factory.

Well I went back to the gun show and the gun was gone. I saw it on another table and asked the guy if he bought it from the other dealer. He said he did and the gun wasn't for sale. I asked him a little about it and he knew what it was worth and it is a factory gun. He was tickled to death to get it.
Oh well I missed it but I can't grip. I got my RM for a great deal this year.
