I was "PAWN SHOPPING" today, and came across a model 28-2 Highway Patrolman. None of my books show this model with a 2 3/4' barrel, but this one has just that. It has a T hammer, T trigger, Pinned and recessed, Red ramp front sight, white outline adjustable rear sight. It has those "DUMB" Pachmayer grips and it is a good 99% with very light cyl. ring. SN N5457XX.
Can anyone tell me more about this nice revolver??? It's my first "N" frame. What is the D.O.B.???

They never made such a gun. I'll bet a dollar it's a 4" if you measure it from the muzzle all the way to the face of the cylinder.
From the muzzle to the front of the frame all my 28's measure 2 3/4"-2 7/8".

mh9 - Highway patrolman's never had shorter than a 4" barrel.
Are you measuring from the face of the cylinder?
I was going to cut one to 3.5 and it would have been close to the underlug............
Unless your ejector rod is hanging in the wind, I'm not sure how this is possible.
I'm happy for you regardless, but lets see some pics!

You have a very rare gun there. I heard that they only made three of those. It's worth big bucks.

I pulled the grips. It is a round butt, and has E 11 stamped on the left side and a triangle with a J inside of it, and a S inside a circle.

"It has no markings on the barrel."
Nothing? No "SMITH & WESSON" or portion thereof?

Well, I guess I don't have a model 28-2. It has a 2-3/4 inch barrel, which don't exist, it has a round butt which don't exist, yet it is a S&W and is marked 28-2. How about the serial number does it exist???N545760. Boy, talk about modified. It has to be cut down. The extractor rod is held in by a spring loaded lug in the shroud that plugs into a slot on the face of the yoke. It has been done very professionally.
But, even with a 6 " barrel, if it was cut down to 2 3/4, some of the barrel stamping would show. It doesn"t.

Sir, this sounds similar to how the Jovino Model 25 "Effectors" were done. These techniques were not exclusive to Jovino, though, so it's hard to know for sure who did the work.
Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Mulehide,
Jovino was like the pre-performance center for S&W I guess. They turned many N frame (large frame) Smiths into the same style as the 28 you are describing having purchased. Many seem to turn up in the 25-2 (45 acp) I have one that is a 25-5 (45 Colt)
The barrels are shortened and the guns are turned from square to round butt.
I'd lay odds your grips are actually for a k frame gun. It seems to be what was done I guess for easy of carry.
These guns make great snub carry guns as you are finding.

Myself and others have tried to help you but you got defensive.
Let me explain something to you since you're new.
We are a family here and we all love S&W's and are very happy for a fellow collector to get a good deal on a special Revolver.
Your gun is modified or Customized. That's not a bad thing as you paid a decent price and YOU like it.
Jovino builds custom guns. They take a factory original and modify it.
This is a friend and Forum members gun that has been professionally "modified" - it's a 29-2 3.5" barrel round butt. It doesn't exist either but it sure is cool. It's a "one off" gun just like yours could be.
Don't fight the program here - we're one big happy family!
Hopefully Lou wont get mad for showing this picture - I customized the grips special for his "modified gun"

Mulhide9,
+1 to what VM said.
I don't think anyone is pickin' on you or your gun - just sayin' they didn't come from the factory that way is all.
It's pretty cool that somone customized it and I'm sure a lot of us (ME!!!) would like to see a picture or two - it just may give someone else (ME!!!!) an idea for a project of their own.

VM.........Yes, I love this forum, but I was not getting defensive I was getting confused and frustrated. Now that I know what the Jovino modifications are, it makes sense. I am sure you can understand that when I claimed it had a round butt, I was told it didn;t. I was also told how to measure the barrel length, but after I told the members I measured right, I was still not beleived. THats Frustrating. Thanks for your knowledgable input.
It is appreciated. Now I'll go shoot my new gun.

Mulhide9,
Ditto on what is said. No one is picking on your choice of guns. Heck . . . ANYONE can get a stock M28.
My favorite wheelgun of all time is one I picked up in a pawnshop about 10-12 years ago. It too was a short barreled N frame and my eye was immediately drawn to it.
Turns out mine started as a long-barreled, .45ACP Model 25-2. Mine doesn't have the round butt conversion but, man-o-man . . . WHAT A SHOOTER!
She's no safe queen . . . she's made to shoot . . . with the slickest custom single AND double action pulls I've ever encountered!
IMHO, it is the revolver that S&W SHOULD have made!!! I've won a bunch of handgun matches with this great and fast pointing gun! The "modern-style" cylinder latch is a personal preference. I'm left-handed and it's shape allows me to make faster reloads in competition.
Heck, ya can't make everyone happy . . . so I choose to make MYSELF happy!
So enjoy shooting your cute "little" N frame. Heck . . . I haven't shot mine since TUESDAY. I guess I'll have to remedy that problem TOMORROW!

Those cool Colorado Elk Antlers are the work of member Patrick Grashorn (of Grashorn Gun Works).
I love his work and am slowly putting 'em on my favorite Smiths, along with Tyler T-grips.
The grips really set off a gun!

Thanks for posting a pic of my favorite wheel gun.
Gotta give props to Cody's Shooters Service in Cody WY. for some of the work and to you for those pretty grips. They fit my paw just right.
Thanks again!

Regardless of how it got that way you have found a very nice unusual gun and I am sure you will get lots of enjoyment from it. We would like to see a picture when you are able to post it.

I know what he's going through. I have almost the exact same gun.
Mine is a model 28-2. The actual barrell length is 2 7/8" ... which is the usual lenght of a S&W 3 inch barrell. The barrell is unmarked and uncut. I has also been modified to a round butt.
When I bought it I had no idea what I was getting. I knew I liked the way it looked and the way it fit my hand. In trying to find out what it was ( after learning it wasn't manufactured that way ) a very few members here were ... dismissive (?).... most were helpful and curious and KKG went WAY out of his way trying to help. Thanks to all of you by the way .
My 28 is now cleaned and wearing a set of Badger rosewood grips. It shoots great .... it probably ani't worth a plug nickel to anyone but me ... and I'm OK with that.
Oh ... mine was 300.00 and when I took it to a gunshow trying to find grips for it ... I didn't make it 10 feet after getting it checked in before I had a dealer ask " What I needed to get for it." Had another bite after showing off the new grips.
Lastly ... I know .... "Pictures .. we love pictures" ... I'll do that too as soon as I can get my son over here to help me.

I think a letter from Mr. Jinks is in order!
Factory or not, that's a neat gun!

Do a search on this forum for "Jovino" or "Effector" model. The John Jovino gun shop in NYC specialized in chopping down S&W revolvers - mostly .45 caliber revolvers - into snubbies for police officers in the 70's. They trademarked the name "Effector" for some of these guns.
Here's my "non-existent" Model 25-2 .45ACP Snubby, courtesy of John Jovino and subsequent owners.
A close look should show the hammer has more of a "teardrop" shape (Jovino) and the trigger has been ground smooth (serations removed). The cylinder yoke has had a spring-loaded ball added with a detent in the frame to replace the missing front locking lug. The grip frame was reshaped to a RB K-frame size (or Ruger Security Six size, depending on year).
Yours is the first Model 28 I've seen done in this manner. It may not have been done by Jovino, but it sure looks like it. Value? Don't ask. What someone is willing to pay for it I suppose, which could be considerable to someone looking for unusual M28's or collecting Jovino custom guns.
