I'm looking for a .22 Mag revolver. I know S&W model 48 was a 22 mag, but are there any others that models out there that can be picked up at a reasonable price? Thanks!

The only reasonable prices I see on S&Ws these days come from private sellers who don't know what they have and what it is worth.
S&W made some other models, the 51 being my own favorite among them. As to reasonable prices, they will be similar to a 48, and the gun is considerably harder to shoot well. You might as well just buy the 48, if that is what you want.

Only other two would be the M51 in blue J-frame and the 651 in J-frame stainless.

There are model 648's in .22 mag also.
They are just like a stainless 617 only in the more expensive magnum.
I would guess these are in the $ 400.00 - 600.00 range depending
on condition, box, tools etc...

I happen to be in may local gun shop when a customer came in with a Model 48 with extra .22LR cylinder for consignment. I picked it up for $450. First and only one I found with an extra cylinder. Frank Jr.

I just bought a Model 651. J-frame cousin to the Model 650, but with adjustable sights. Mine has a 4" barrel, but I think they made them in 2", if you could find one.

Smith's in .22 mag: Not easy to find .... and when you do ..... BIG BUCKS!!!
But for those that perservere ...... fine weapons.
What would seem to be requiring overpriced ammo ...... and it is expensive ..... also performs far better than the prevailing statistics would reveal.
And fps for fps and energy figures aside ... it's the better bullet construction of the .22 mag that gives it it's Ommp!
And I know that this is a Smith forum .... but for your purposes .... will a Ruger SA do?
I know .... I held out for a Smith 48 ... would of prefered a 648 ..... but would a used SA do?

The best of the S&W 22 MRF revolvers, and with a 22 LR cylinder to boot.

Yes a Ruger would do, until I could find a 48. I would just like to add a .22 Mag to the collection. I have the food but not the animal So I ask what good is the ammo if you don't have the weapon?

elkhunter76,
Welcome to the forum! You might want to delete that auction link. The seller isn't welcome around here (major understatement) and links to current auctions aren't allowed.

You really stepped in it quick for a new guy!
Rooster,
Get one with at least a 6" barrel (longer is better). At $12 a box, you might as well get some velocity out of the cartridge.

New (?) or not it is still over priced by about $300 to $350 IMHO. I would never give that for one that I knew for sure was NIB, not when a 617 can be bought for $550 NIB. If you want a 22 MRF and only a S&W will do, find a nice new or used 6 hole 617 and have it reamed to 22 magnum and save some money and you will know what you have.
I have a friend that did that to a 617 and loves it and how well it shoots. I think he said it cost just under $700 total, which included the 617 and a new cylinder. He said the gun smith reamed the original cylinder and ordered and timed the new LR cylinder.

The Dan Wesson is an excellent choice for 22 magnum, check this one out. Forgot to mention they are sort of rare and hard to find
and I may be bidding on this one. Dan Wesson 22 Magnum

Lot of used ones because the owners ears are ringing and they are saying "what", pardon me,"huh" Seriously dangerously loud.

I have one for sell that I got from my dad after he passed. It is in like new condition and IF fired, only a couple times. I found no ammo which leads me to believe he bought it and never shot it. You will probably not run across one very often in this condition. From my checking sold ones in not quite as go condition have sold upwards of $800. That is what I would like to get for mine. I am trying to post it with pictures now.
Let me know if you would be interested.
