It may be both. Sure it is just a try, but there are enough fools with money that the try may end in success.

All used S&W prices seem to have gone through the roof. S&W's new gun prices are absurdly high. So the current philosophy seems to be, "Why should I worry about paying prevailing new gun prices for a used gun that I really want - given what S&W is turning out these days?" Since most of us are less than enthusiastic about new production, there is some logic to that sentiment, though it is self-destructive.

Way overpriced, as far as I can see. I haven't seen any of either the 3-in or 4-in for a while but I do have a track that ends in May 2008:

Smith & Wesson 547 3” RB Revolver in 9 mm. Bluebook of Gun Values (29th Edition) indicates between $675 in 98% condition and $775 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 40 recorded prices for this model gun from $500 to $999 over a period of 1722 days ending May 7, 2008. The average price as of that date was $749. No refurbs, refinishes, regular sights, all represented as 95% or better, no distinction for import location or engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $317.

The seller missed the peak buying mania. The 3-in gun has been declining in average price for over a year and that of the 4-in (rarer) has been increasing during the same period.

Not a big fan of a 9mm revolver...but rather intrigued as they are so rare. And this one is in very nice shape other than the refinish.

547's have gone through the roof! I passed on one back in the mid 90's for $250. I'm still kickin myself. Most of the people that have them won't give them up without a fight.....

I'm sure glad I picked the one I have up when I did, It's a great shooter & there were fewer of the four inchers made than the three inch..
Plan on aquireing a three inch someday at a decent price to use as a K frame carry piece..
My 1981 547 sports the Pinned Barrel & Reccessed Cylinder making it propper for this section of the forum..
Prices on everything seem to be on the rise but will soon top out, There's still deals to be had with alot of looking & waiting..

Talk about kismet! Through a rather convuluded trade, I have ended up with a blue 4-inch M-547. It appears to be unfired with a barely visible turn line on the cylinder, but no other finish issues. It came with the matching box, vapor paper and other paper work, but an earlier owner looted the cleaning kit (surprise). I am in the process of trying to find out a little history on the 547 (I've heard they were originally French Police over-runs), the lenght of the production run and get some ideas on a value. I plan on selling the 547 to regain some of the boot I had to add in to make the initial trade happen. Thanks for any help.

Note Two Firing Pins, The upper One slams the case forward at the moment of ignition., The Lower Ignites the Primer = Very Cool..
