No mention of internal locks. I was thinking the product codes for the ones with internal locks was 17XXXX. These are 16XXXX and 15XXXX.

Torch off a stout load in it, and I bet "interesting" will be an understatement.

a 41 magnum "Night Guard" isn't that different from the model 357 "Mountain Lite" that S&W put out a few years ago, scandium frame, titanium cylinder and 3.5" barrel. Actually, the Night Guards stainless steel cylinder may actually result in a gun that you can shoot without worrying about breaking your wrists.

I love the .41 Magnum, but I have to agree, the Nightguard in that caliber would be a handful with factory ammunition. The .44 Special Nightguard would seem to offer a good compromise, esp. with factory loads. Of course, with suitable "reasonable" handloads, it's just make your choice.

Those Model 57s do look very appealing indeed.

Yes, With SHOT 2009 approaching in a few months, it is once again going to be time to go and see what need to be added to the S&W collection.

Here we are with four more revolvers returning to the square butt. Blue and nickel are back on the model 57 and I for one am happy about it. If the quality continues along the lines of the model 24, 25, 27 and 29 revolvers that were shown last year, I will be VERY happy.

The Night Guard will not be much than firing the L-frame sized mode 415T Taurus Total Titanium revolver which has a 2 1/2" barrel and weighs in at 19 ounces.

The S&W 357NG will be at least 40% heavier with it's Ion Bond coated stainless steel cylinder and the larger N-frame. In fact, it should weigh in slightly heavier than the 329NG that is already in production. I predict the 357NG will tip the scales right at 30 ounces.

Some quick comments and some fast math...

I've fired the Taurus 415T with 175g Silvertips and it wasn't that bad. Of course the Taurus is ported and I'm sure that made a difference - along with their ridged rubber "ribber" grips. I keep looking for one of those in CA with no luck.

The 357NG .41 Magnum, should weigh in between 27oz and 30oz (based on looking at the M327 and M329). Based on that information recoil performance should be something like this:

210g Rem. LSWC @ 950 fps: 11.42 ft-lbs
175g Win Silvertip @1250 fps: 13.27 ft-lbs
210g Speer GDHP @1250 fps: 18.00 ft-lbs
210g Rem. JSP @1,300 fps: 19.25 ft-lbs

By way of comparison:
M686 4" .357 125g @1450fps: 6.61 ft-lbs
M686 4" .357 158g @1235fps: 7.44 ft-lbs
M629 4" .44M 240g @1180fps: 13.33ft-lbs
M629 4" .44M 250g @1250fps: 15.80ft-lbs
360SC 2".357 125g @1450fps: 22.03ft-lbs

The only good thing about the Night Guard .41 is that it could get ammo makers to produce some "slow" .41 mag rounds.

..got to admit it...as much as I hate the IL I emailed my dealer asking he get me a price on the Night Guard... Since I already have a 357 Airlite figured why not support .41s... Just wish S&W would find another place for that "hole"...

Maybe this has been covered before, but the current Smith & Wesson website shows or lists no 41 magnum revolvers? Have they discontinued them?

Some very interesting 41 Mags listed here. Looks like S&W has not entirely dropped the caliber. As much as I like the idea of a 41 Mag MG, I'd rather see one in 10mm.

Yes, all .41s are now gone from S&Ws lineup..

This is either a limited run for the distributor or they will have them listed on their website after the SHOT Show in mid-January...

I appreciate the response on the 41 mag question. Actually the limited run thing is an interesting marketing approach. I assume 41's sell a little slow, so a private distributer orders their own runs and sells them exclusively. No risk to Smith & Wesson as the guns are all sold. The distributer can name their own price (more of less).

...since it may be a limited run, if the distributor really wanted them to sell out fast he would ask for no ILs...

Fellow .41 fans,

I heard from a VERY reliable industry source that Smith has made up a quantity of Model 58 M&Ps for a possible re-run.

I have owned many .41 Mags, but have always longed for a Model 58. Hopefully the powers-that-be at Smith and Wesson will bless us with a re-inroduction of this great revolver!

Just amend it slighly by adding "for now unless something totally entersting comes along!"

I was just telling my son that i had everthing I wanted but that was before hearing about a 41 night gaurd...

Why should they bother with the expense of relocating that hole(or doing away with it entirely)? You bought the gun, therefore assuring them you approve of it just the way it is! If you want change, write them and tell them you WOULD buy that gun if it didn't have that worthless "hole".

...already have...both emails and letters.

Out of 50 S&Ws in the safe I have three ILs now... 686/.38 Super, 357 Airlite .41 and a 4" M500... Only have those as I knew S&W would never produce them w/o a hole... But there's about a half dozen new offerings that I would buy w/o the IL...a M22 would be on top of the list along with a M500 PC. But with the holes I can live without them...

Philistine! Why would you want a revolver with a similar sized chambers and bore with less power?

Thanks grtoppcop... I just spooged my keyboard.

A new series of M58's would be good sellers for the .41 Fans. I think a stainless would even sell well if it had a matte stainless finish.
