I was scoping out an auction site revolver that is an N-frame with smooth factory medallioned combats. These are SQUARE BUTTS.......they look identical to the old factory smooth combats that you would find on a 617 no dash k-frame, just larger to fit an N-frame.. I have never seen this style grip offered on a square butt N-frame. This gun is of mid-80's vintage. Was this smooth combat grip available for square butt N-frames at one time?
On a side note..........I'm sure many of you know that those old factory combats are getting some serious money on the auction sites these days. All of my original Smith wood grips have some sort of factory stamp on the inside. I've noticed a seller on Ebay that seems to have an unlimited supply of the k-frame square butt combats. I don't ever see that factory inspection/date stamp on this seller's grips. Perhaps one of the more knowledgeable could offer up a tutorial on how to identify genuine grips. This would make a good sticky......Thanks in advance!

Do you classify these as smooth N frame combats? Or what you guys call combat have finger grooves? Years ago the factory simply called them presentation grips when I bought them in the 70s.

Feralmerril and Deanodog's pictured grips are not "combat" grips. The factory called them "uncheckered Target" stocks.
The "combat" grips have finger grooves and are made of Goncala Alves. I don't think they ever were standard on any S&W handgun but were offered as an aftermarket item. I have a set or two for N frames, and they were also made for K frames. Pretty, but don't fit my hand very well.

Buff is right as to the above pictured grips. I'm talking about smooth(no checkering) finger groove wood combat grips..........and yes.......they were standard on some k-frame square butts. You can verify this by checking out a SCSW #3. Plenty of pics that show this factory grip. I've just never seen this grip on the N-frames.

Combat's were standard on a few models, my M16-4 6" bbl that I purchased new came with factory combat grips, and my 629-4 Classic also came with round butt Goncalo Alves wood combat grips.
Flipping through the pages of SCS&W 3rd edition, it looks like the square butt combats as standard factory were more prevalent on K-Frames.
Feralmerril... outstanding grips, but I want to know who made that equally outstanding folding knife at the top of the pic... wow

Pinky...........That's what I'm talking about! Were these an option through the "S&W store" or did they come as a standard factory offering on certain models?

I don't know. My gun came with checkered targets. I bought the combats from a forum member. They are, for me, "just right" on an N-frame square butt.

And here all along I thought the "uncheckered target grips" were properly called "presentation grips". Anyone else believe that?

Yeah me too toroflow1, I thought of smooth target stocks as "presentation grips".
They are much easier to control recoil (for me) than checkered stocks.
And they look pretty damned good!

On that photo of mine the grips on the 27-2 were discriped from the factory as "presentation grips" when I sent it back, had my name engraved, bought the grips, wood box, wide hammer & trigger and w/o rs, and red ramp. That was early 70s. I bought the gun new with no options, sent it back, asked for what I got and was billed that way.
That knife was made by BUCK and a cheif yellowhorse edition made to look like obsidion or flinted steel. From the late 70s or 80s. They also made a sheth bigger fixed blade that looked even better!

Yes, they were designated by the factory as "presentation" stocks. I have a pair on a 4" Model 29. I find it far more comfortable to shoot heavy loads with these grips.

I bought these back in 1989 from a gunshop. The N combats did come on some S&W's however. The hunter models with the scope ring cuts on the barrel, came standard with the combats on them. I have lots of old gun magazines with the S&W adds for these guns, with these stocks listed as a standard part of the combination.
Here are a set on a 29-5 Classic Hunter.

Sorry, I meant the N frame square butt "combat" grips weren't used on any production guns. We all know some of the round butt N's used them, as did a lot of K frame guns.
But, square butt N frame, I don't think so.

Buff- as I posted above the N-frames with the scope ring cuts on the ribs, did come with square butt combats on them. I would have to dig for a while, but I could find one of the magazine adds.

Look at the two 625MGs below. The top sports a fg-style RB square conversion grip in cocobolo that Ahrends sourced to S&W for a while, while the bottom actually came, albeit 6.5+ yr ago on closeout from my local pusher, in an S&W plastic box labelled 'Round Butt, Combat, Crimson Ironwood' - and are made of Dymondwood:

SCS&W III, page 202, has a photo of 3 M-29's, one an 8-3/8" with the scope ring cuts on the barrel and wearing the square butt finger groove "Combat" S&W grips under discussion.
The Classic Hunter M-29's (6 inch full-lug barrel, 4 position adjustable front sight, non-fluted cylinder), like ME109's beauty above, came with Hogue rubber grips, at least mine did. His grips shown are a good example of what we are talking about here.
