For those that have a 649, how do you like it? Is the action a little different with the shrouded hammer set-up?
The m37 is my CCW. Would the extra weight of the 649 be very noticeable?
I worry that if the moment of truth finally arrives and I have to draw the weapon, I could snag that hammer and cause problems.
What do you all think?

I don't carry so I would not be a good judge but I like the 649s. You still have the option for single action and the stronger steel frame with low maint. A little heavier but manageable. Personally I would trade.

I have often carried one of my 649s, or the M38 Bodyguard. They both work well, but the 649s are easier to shoot. I don't mind the extra weight--most of the time.

I'd be tempted to try real hard to keep the 37 and add a 649 to the collection. Who knows if Congress will start trying to ban snubbies again.

A trick you might try for smooth draws from a pocket is to put your thumb over the hammer lightly (don't pull on it at all). That is supposed to keep the hammer spur from snagging the lining of the pocket. Dry practice this first, of course. I read about it in a magazine article, possibly by Mas Ayoob. I've tried it in practice and it seems to work OK.

They're both good guns and they both work. If you find the 37 comfortable enough to shoot. I would STRONGLY recommend that you keep it. I have found that every time I found a lighter gun, I got used to carrying it, and wasn't that crazy about going back to a heavier one, although choice of pants and belt can affect this GREATLY.

If the hammer spur bothers you (which is easy to understand; it would bother me), either do as ACP230 says, or get a bobbed hammer (use the original DA sear, and keep the original hammer for use with certain holsters or for resale of the gun or in case you change your mind).

A Model 40 was practically my first gun, and I have no problem trigger-cocking and shooting well DA only. How about you? This may affect your choice. If you shoot a lot better SA, AND if your 37 is a RB, an original Bodyguard (38) might be a better choice than a 49 or 649. FWIW, this would not be true for me, since my affection for my 37's includes their square butts.

I am pretty comfy with the m37...it's a keeper.
Maybe I'll focus the three other fine specimens this shop has right now...
a .44 sp 296
a 6" 28-2
or a anniversary edition model 25.
Thanks for your responses!

I carry a Model 37 with factory bobbed hammer as well as a Model 36 that someone bobbed the hammer. I also have a Model 49 that doesn't get carried much as it's in such nice condition.
I like them all and carry in an Uncle Mikes pocket holster mainly. No hammers to be concerned about snagging and I know all are DAO.
Might be a cheaper route for your Model 37 and you could buy a second hammer and keep your original if you should decide to change it back.

TRADE! 37s are a dime a dozen. 649 are harder to find.

Do not trade. The 37 is more comfortable for carry, especially in the side pocket. Even though it has a hammer, you can use the Massad Ayoob draw and have no problem removing a revolver with a hammer from your pocket.

The 649 is simply too heavy for pocket carry. If you are going to have to have a holster, then git a bigger gun.
