I was checking out a s&w model 64 today. This gun is awfully clean, and doesn't appear to have been used much. However, when I open the cylinder, it seems like I have to push a bit to get it open. Otherwise, the fit and function checks out...this doesn't seem normal, can it be easily adjusted?

Thanks!

Clean & lube and maybe take out the screw that holds the cylinder axle crane thingy in and see if someone tightened it too tight. If it's in good shape it probably sat in the safe and maybe the lube is old and getting sticky? I bought a revolver that someone had bought new back in the 70's and shot it once but never cleaned it. When I bought it 30+ years later, the cylinder wouldn't turn at all cause the lube had gotten hard. A quick clean with rem oil and it was good as new. rj

Sierra Kilo,

Certainly a good cleaning would be in order.
However, to answer your question "can it be easily adjusted", I would say yes. Without seing your gun in person, a couple of things come to mind which could be a problem and easily adjusted. The ejector rod could be a bit too long. The yoke screw made need some adjustment as it may just be a tad too tight fit onto the button of the yoke.
If you have no knowledge of these fixes, if in fact one of these are a problem, then I'd suggest a S&W armorer take a look.

Hope this helps
Chris

Someone may have mixed the sideplate screws while reassembling. It can almost certainly be corrected for a song.

Exessive endshake can cause the cylinder to be difficult to open because the rod isn't being thrown fully, Try an pull the cylinder toward the recoil shield & see if the problem goes away
As others have said overtightened endshake sideplate screw or incorrect screw can cause drag after the cylinder has opened
That's the great thing about this forum
