I just got to thinking today, how far do you think the lifetime warantee would go to repair a firearm? Under a long stretch of shooting, ie. 20-30 years do you think that the lifetime warantee would include such extensive repairs as frame/barrel replacement? Or would there come a point where they would just say that a gun is "shot out"? this would be after long years of use, not abuse. What do you think?

My crystal ball's broke. The current Lifetime Warranty is excellent (best in the business) and covers anything but outright abuse and finish wear. I'd be more worried about whether S&W is around in 20-30 years (or GM, Ford, Chrysler...).

Don't know about 20 years from now, but know of an avid silhouette shooter who shot a stock 629 to rags with factory Remington ammo and got a new gun from S&W.
He sent it to S&W with a letter explaining what he used it for and asked them how much they would charge to rebuild it.

As long as the gun was made after 1989 this is then they started the lifetime warranty program. If your gun was made before 1989 you are on your own...

Sent my 1959 model K-22 model 48 WMR Target Masterpiece in for some cylinder tunning as it had less then .002" B&C clearance and was too much headspace. Came back all nice and fixed and no charge. So I bought another S&W Saturday. See how that **** works on some of us?

Not necessarily so. I know of several cases of S&W repairing earlier guns at no charge. One even included a barrel replacement due to a badly machined forcing cone. I think the real answer is, "It depends."

I was going to send my 19-4 made in 1980 but they told me that they would not cover the gun because it was not made after 1989 and they stopped making parts for the 19 in 1998.

SWHC stock is currently at $2.62 which is about as high as it has bee since September. It ain't looking good right now but I'd like to think they'll be around for a while longer. I just bought another 100 shares. With any luck I'll have something worth more than the paper it is printed on to leave to my Grand Kids some day.
I've had dealings with the S&W Service Department over the last 40 years and I have yet to have anything to really complain about even with Post WW-2 guns made before '89.
