I have been looking for a pinned bbl model 36 or 60 for a week or so. I stopped in my favorite gun shop, and there, in the case was a model 36 that a retired cop had brought in. It was in the metal corner box with the original label, warranty card and cleaning rod/brush. There is the slightest mark on the topstrap where somebody dropped something on it. According to the officer that brought it in, it was given to him about 25 years ago, and he put it in the drawer and forgot about it. I don't have a cam, so I can't provide pics. Can somebody give me an idea what year it was made? SN is 7096xx. Oh yeah, I grabbed it for 400.00 with 2 holsters thrown in.

If there is a J in front of the 7096xx it was made in 1979-1980.

tac803, My 36's serial is 752497 and I checked with S&W and was told it's 1969.Yours has to be 69 or a little earlier.
Give S&W a call at 1-800-331-0852 and they can tell you the year.

My M36 is numbered 547XXX, and we have dated it to around 1968 1/2.
Yours is probably a few years later, as mentioned by a previous poster.
good luck with it!

Most guys here will tell you that the best resource is the S&W catalog.
With yours being a 6 digit #, it looks to me like it was made$in 1969. Unless I'm reading it wrong, the ser.#'s for that year run up to 786544.
Earlier #'s / years are 5 digits.

Thanks for the help folks! I went down this morning and registered it. I polished the trigger surface to eliminate the ridges, blued it, and broke the edges on the hammer. Now to break it in!

Where do you live??? Why did you have to go "DOWN" and register your new hand gun??? You must live in Arnoldfornia.

I found a flat latch m36 a few years ago that didn't have a blemish on it in the original box. The serial number is 398xxx and I was told that it is a late '63 or early '64 gun.

I got lucky and timed it just right as well with my M36. A state trooper had just traded it in at my shooting range. The serial number is 711xxx. According to S&W CS it was manufactured in 1968.

Mulehide, I live in upstate NY just South of Buffalo. NY residents are required to have a permit to own a handgun, and if the county you live in deems you worthy, you may be able to get a carry permit. Permits are issued for home, target and hunting, or unrestricted. It all depends on which county you live in as to how hard it is to get an unrestricted permit.

All guns must be registered with the permit office, and go on file with the NY State Police in Albany as well. Most counties require you to purchase the weapon, bring the receipt in, have the information added to your permit, pay the 3.00 fee, and then go pick up your gun.
