Dad's Gun was probably made in 1966 or 1967. Maybe somebody here can call it closer than SCSW.
The nickel and gold plating was almost certainly an outside job, not a S&W finish combination. There was a shop in my home town in those days that specialized in two and even three tone finishing, blue, gold, nickel.

I have 1 of the 54 brushed nickel’s also. It doesn’t have any of the standard “n” markings that most people believe it should have. All the non 28 fans believe N should be there. If a 28 was satin blue it has an H on the cylinder. My nickel doesn’t have the H either. My serial number is. N305xx

I would imagine a factory letter would clear things up , and be a good investment if one ever decided to sell one of these....

That gun looks very legitimate to my untrained eye. It would sure be worth the cost of a letter ($100 now). Per the expert quote below, the serial number is in the range.

It will set you back $100, but it would also provide authenticity, which will support a high value of your nickel plated Model 28. The finish on yours certainly looks correct, but there are many people out there who will go to great lengths to create forgeries.
