I've got a couple of Smith K-frames, a couple of 66's, a couple of 17's, and a 586 and 686 that I wanted to "improve" (slicken, better trigger) with some different mainsprings and rebound slide springs. I am going to order the JK book from Midway, and while I am at it I was going to order a rebound slide spring tool. Being an impatient kind of guy I was going to order springs at the same time. Intended use would be primarily for punching paper, golf balls, farting around and such.
Any recommendations for what springs you would be ordering up if in my shoes? Any economies of scale getting a six-pack of springs at the same time? TIA.

Get the JM video while your shopping. It is highly recommended for tuning K,L and N frames.

Buy the "set" as you get a reduced power mainspring, and three different return springs. You can install all of them and see which one you prefer.

Brownells and Wolf brand springs are both good. I think that Wolf makes the springs for Brownells. Agree, get the set with the 3 rebound springs.

My three inch Model 13 has a fourteen pound rebound spring and a stock mainspring. I just simply don't trust a lighter mainspring in a Magnum caliber. This gun has an action as slick and smooth as warm butter, and it gets better with each dryfire.

H. Richard,
I took your advice and installed all three of the rebound springs. It was a bit tough getting them all into the return housing, but I did it. Gun is a real sweetheart now.

You really gotta push on that last one, don't you?

Definitely get the JM video while you’re at it. It is well worth the price as it shows and explains things in a way that is difficult to do in print. It will walk you through the whole thing start to finish, giving pointers not only on what to do but also, and maybe more importantly, what not to do. Jerry does a good job of explaining it all and the production quality is also very good.
For a defensive gun I would stick with the stock mainspring for ignition reliability and wouldn't drop much on the rebound spring or you could end up with sluggish trigger reset.
For strictly a “fun gun”, experiment away to find what works best for you.
