So, if I shoot a few rounds of shorts and longs in my K-22, will the moon stop revolving around the earth and the sun explode or will I just get poor accuracy and a lot of burnt powder/lead build up in the cylinders???
Is there a more serious (as in damage to me) side of this??

No serious or long term effects to firing shorts, longs, or .22 CB caps in the .22 LR chamber. Just be sure to thoroughly brush out the chambers after shooting the shorter cased rounds.
The reputation for ruining .22 chambers from firing .22 Shorts dates back several generations ago to the days of .22 blackpowder, sermi-smokeless powder, and corrosive primers. Even regular cleaning often resulted in rusted out chambers and bores because the ratio of primer compound to powder charge was so high. A rust pitted chamber of course, would give difficult extraction and other problems.

I inherited 5,000 .22 Shorts a long time ago and shot all of them in my Model 18. I scrubbed out the chambers every so often. You can't tell, by examining them now, that they ever had a Short shot in them.

I think the best solution is to go buy another K22 and use it exclusively for shooting shorts. I'd make sure its significantly different from the one you've got now, too. No real reason for that, at least mechanically. But its a hell of a good excuse to pick up another nice gun. Lie about it if you have to, I can justify almost anything these days.

IIRC, Longs have the same case length as Long Rifles. You can shoot CB Longs without depositing anything where stuff hasn't been deposited before.
